Five of my favorite @DollyParton quotes from our #UnlockingUs conversation! PS: I just had to ask her the Burt Reynolds question for my grandma, who I know is listening from somewhere with a sweet tea in one hand and a Benson & Hedges in the other. We talked about her book, “The Art of Gathering” and our team is still quoting her! This is a tough Thanksgiving for many of us. I desperately miss my parents. After talking to Priya about the importance of purpose and structure when we gather people, I decided to make our small gathering tomorrow more purposeful. We’re going to connect in a new way, including doing a little collective crafting to remind my parents how much we love them. It will be trial and error – for sure. It might even be a disaster. But I’m taking Priya’s advice and, “setting a bold, sharp purpose for our time together.” Plus we have tamales and shrimp campechana – so we’ll survive. You can listen to our conversation (including deconstructing my1994-honky-tonk-BBQ-super-fun wedding) anywhere you listen to podcasts! I recorded an episode of the #UnlockingUs podcast late yesterday for this morning. Like you, I’m feeling wobbly and weary — this is the practice that’s really saving me right now. But it’s true. No one explains brain science like my friend @davideagleman. Not only did this convo give me hope — I’m now wearing my watch on my right hand and brushing my teeth with my left hand. Thank you @austinchanning for always showing up and inviting us to stand with you and learn from you in the shadow of hope. Finish strong. 💙 Getting our head and heart around a concept as big as trust is difficult, and conversations that include anything close to “I don’t trust you” are rarely productive. In fact, we often shut down when someone questions our trustworthiness because it feels like an assault on our character — our very being. This is where BRAVING can help guide our conversations around trust and help us identify our strengths and opportunities for building deeper trust. Sharing how I use BRAVING over on LinkedIn today. Not only do I agree with this quote, I also believe that our failures make our successes possible! Although failure and setbacks can be painful and tough to navigate, they teach us the most about ourselves and the next right thing to do. Grateful for my family, our team, friends, healthcare workers, essential workers, organizers, artists, educators, daring leaders, and our awkward, brave and kind community. ❤️ What’s on your gratitude list? Talking about the #DaretoLead podcast with Jimmy Fallon tonight. Also – just in case you find yourself in a pandemic DIY make up situation: Do NOT try magnetic eyelashes for the first time – 5 minutes before you go on Zoom. While sitting at your desk with no mirror. WTHell. I was laughing and cussing and panicking in equal measure. They never made it to my face but the stapler on my desk looks very flirty. I love the feeling of stretching to experience what’s possible! @sarahelizabethlewis1 gave me language for so much of the weirdness that happens when I’m creating and thinking. I thought it was just me! Link in profile to listen to our conversation on the #DaretoLead podcast. I love what Eric Mosley and his co-author, Derek Irvine, write in their new book, Making Work Human: “Employees have the right to a human workplace. Leaders have the power to create one.” They explain, “People are your biggest investment, not your biggest cost. You invest a fortune trying to find them, train them, increase their skills, and make sure they know the right thing to do in both clear and ambiguous situations. They need tools that enable them to carry on the most human and valuable activities, such as innovation and collaboration.” This book challenged and inspired me to do better – to be better! Thank you to my team + Cadence13 +Spotify + Parcast Network I’m having so much fun and learning every day. ❤️ “The Rise” by Dr. Sarah Lewis is one of my favorite books! In this episode of the #DaretoLead Podcast, Dr. Lewis and I talk why the word “failure” doesn’t quite capture the often transformative experience of falling and beginning again, the difference between success and mastery, and the power of setting audacious goals that are right outside our grasp. The conversation was so moving for me that we’re doing Part II after the New Year! Link in profile to listen. We can’t practice empathy if we don’t believe people. The quickest path to an empathic miss and disconnection is to evaluate and judge what people are sharing with us through the lens of our lived experiences, rather than listening and believing. This conversation (and role play) with Diversity/Equity/Inclusion expert and Dare to Lead facilitator, Aiko Bethea (@rare_coach), speaks to the heart of hard conversations. Gabby Rivera is the first Latina to write for Marvel Comics and her debut novel, “Juliet Takes a Breath” will take your breath away. I talk to @QuirkyRican about writing, joy as resistance, and America Chavez — a queer Latina superhero who is vulnerable + kicks ass. Link in profile to listen to the new episode of #UnlockingUs.
