La Rustica! Opened by @jwebxl a good while back as his first 8C and hesitant to grade it that. Well safe to say it’s 8C as shit and also likely the hardest boulder problem in Switzerland. And exceptionally rad. Although pretty nightmarish for shorter people, if the crux pocket was just 2 millimeters farther I’d be flat out of luck. So count your blessings. Feels fantastic to finish projects overcoming subpar conditions and making it count last chance before a massive rain front shuts things down for a long while! Most times it’s such an uphill battle with hard projects. But sometimes, very rarely, things just work out nice and smooth. An extremely rare treat to not get too used to. I found this striking boulder 11 years ago but discarded it in the maybe pile speculating that it probably doesn’t go by the looks of it. Today I opened it and called it Digital Populism. I didn’t have any ambitions to return to Hueco anytime soon and it’s been many years since my last visit but I found a new appreciation for the place in a less crowded time and enjoyed every day I had there to the max! For the past few months I’ve been trying to catch some good climbing conditions. Sadly I’ve come to the realization that they’ve all been caught. Now it’s time for us to face reality. A 5 to 10 year ban on taking advantage of good conditions might be necessary to let them regenerate. We’ve all been using good conditions as a crutch for our selfish pursuits trying to send just that little bit harder. The only shining example all along has been @alexandermegos who pioneered lowering our expectations for any decent climbing weather and made visionary statements like “there is no too warm, too wet, too humid”. So why not go for a climb in the rain to save those prime conditions. While it is true that good conditions can still be found in safe havens like Hueco – it is only because they strictly limit the number of people that get to take advantage of these precious ‘condies’ each day. Luckily over the past decade many climate controlled indoor facilities have been built to cope with this epidemic. Also the U.S. military has been working on their classified weather modification programs. I guess we’ll just have to tough it out and wait for technology to come through with a solution for the ultimate sustainable conditions.
