A big shout out to the nurses that swabbed us, the crew that worked so hard, to our craft services and catering for creatively finding ways to make us nourishing food safely and to all the members of The Good Doctor team. My dad got his dancing partner back last night.
Boy, did she like to dance. And laugh. She had such a distinctive way of throwing her head back with mouth open wide and unabashedly laughing loudly. Infectious. She loved a good time and embraced every adventure wholeheartedly.
She was happy to see you, she loved giving big hugs, she wasn’t afraid to be direct, gave every single person (from principal to janitor) at the school she worked at a flower and a card for their birthday. And after working long hours she’d stay up late making Valentine’s so that no one had an empty cubby. Anybody who knew her will remember her “warm fuzzies”. Her rocking chair was always open for business. She dressed up for Halloween every year to lead the school parade and in winter wore jingle bells in her ears and ugly Christmas sweaters before they were trendy (she didn’t think they were ugly, bless her) She rode every roller coaster she met and rescued cats like it was her job. And man did she have Patience, she gave Job a run for his money. When she retired, she worked part time at Disneyland as a greeter so she see the the excitement and wonder of everybody’s faces. Kid at heart.
If she had any regrets, it might have been that Alzheimer’s robbed her of saying “I love you” one last time. She said those three words more than there are stars in the sky. Her fight with the disease these past 9 years was astonishing in strength and persistence and grace and dignity. No words to amply describe how difficult it’s been for her and how inspiring it was to witness her journey. An honor.

This is as close as I could get to Mom today. I’ve got 5 more days left before heading back to Canada where we will be separated by an international border restricting us from seeing one another until May. I am beyond sad to have to say goodbye to her. And yet, my story is nothing compared to the countless heartbreaking ones of families torn apart by this pandemic. I am daily grateful to the frontline healthcare workers who work TIRELESSLY, many shifts back to back, often without the ability to see their own families. They are depleted. They are traumatized. Gone are the 7pm shift change songs of support and applause, replaced by quarantine fatigue by many civilians. These frontline workers who put their lives on the line taking care of our loved ones don’t need our pity though, they need us to do our part in this global disaster. Please stay at home if you can. Please wear a mask. Please stay socially distanced. Yes there’s a vaccine but not everyone has it yet so let’s do what we can to get rid of this: let’s get back to holding our loved ones. 💜

To be honest, I was resistant to reading a book when my Mom died. How can anyone say anything different from what I’ve already heard. Then this book was put in front of me.
