My happy place. Needed this after a very tough week. Grateful for Steve who takes me out on the boat, turns on Bill Withers and makes me laugh. #LakeTravis #mymagiclake
Our friends, our partners, our family, our sweet pets – to love is to be deeply vulnerable. And that’s as brave as it gets.
This episode got personal fast.
Steve and I have been together for 30 years and 2020 was probably the most difficult season of our marriage. The stress of trying to keep our kids safe while attending to their need for connection, worrying about our parents’ wellbeing, trying to make work work — it was completely overwhelming.
Drs. John and Julie Gottman have dedicated their careers to helping people love and take care of each other. Their work is research-based and life-changing.
After decades of study, the Gottmans and their colleagues @gottmaninstitute can predict with 90% accuracy whether a couple will stay together after observing the first 3 minutes of an argument. That’s unheard of in the social sciences.
The conversation is a game-changer.
In Austin to work on new research. Electricity has been out for 15 hours. It’s 25 degrees outside.
You can hear the trees moaning as they fight to hold the weight of the ice. I have on two pairs of leggings and all the socks I can find.
But my morning decaf is happening.
Y’all stay safe and warm. If you are able, donate to the places helping people right now.
Texans can handle 100 degree summers with 80% humidity. We know how to prepare for hurricanes. But we really don’t do this.

I had to wear my @liverpoolfc hoodie today to our Friday all-hands on Zoom just so I could trash talk a couple of my favorite people.
It was Lauren’s birthday so I volunteered to sing and switched it up to “You Will Never Walk Alone.” She’s a Spurs fan. She muted me.
And, Ashley – a Man City fan – asked me if I need a “Pep (Guardiola) talk.”
Surrounded!
You either own your story or it owns you. If we want to own the story of our country so we can write a new ending, we have to understand our story. The entire story. The truth.
“How the Word Is Passed” blew me away. I love history and I thought I had a full picture. I was wrong. This is an urgent read. Thank you for the tireless research @clintsmithiii.
I define a leader as anyone who holds themselves responsible for finding the potential in people and processes, and has the courage to develop that potential. It has nothing to do with titles or corner offices. The toughest part of daring leadership is building a courageous culture where armor is neither required nor rewarded. #RehumanizeWork

Loved this conversation with my friend @adamgrant. His new book “Think Again” is so smart and challenging in the best way. For example, this quote: “Listen to ideas that make you think hard — not just opinions that make you feel good.” Listen for free to the new episode of the Dare to Lead podcast on Spotify.
Aiko (@rare_coach) is such an amazing teacher. I learn something from her every time we talk.
Check out Part II of our Dare to Lead podcast conversation on Spotify (one convo was not enough).
We talk about taking action, holding ourselves and others accountable, and real strategies for Black History Month.
Another favorite quote from Aiko’s work:
“You can hold people accountable in an empathic way. You can set and hold boundaries and still be generous toward people.
And, if you really care about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, you actually crave people holding you accountable and setting boundaries.” – Aiko Bethea
We’re on hiatus from both podcasts for a couple of weeks. We’ll be back with Dare to Lead on July 12, and Unlocking Us is coming back sister-strong with a six-week series on “The Gifts of Imperfection.”
Grab your copy of the book and follow along with me, Ashley, and Barrett starting June 23.
Can y’all believe I get to have these amazing conversations for my job? Dammit. So lucky and grateful.
Today I’m talking to two unforgettable creators: @roxanegay74 and @debbiemillman.
Roxane and Debbie are newlyweds, and we talk about their love story, creativity, and the power of a dinner party. Their words and art have been very influential in my life — talking to them about the ins-and-outs of ordinary life is, in itself, extraordinary.
This was so much fun! @mrbrettgoldstein and I laughed, sang, and talked in weird voices. And, you will know more about my secret movie life and my British mystery addiction than anyone should know. Thank you, Brett! ❤️
PS — Yes, this is your Ted Lasso crush, the incomparable, Roy Kent.
Editor @jenniferrwalsh and contributor Ashley C. Ford (@smashfizzle) talk about the new anthology, “Hungry Hearts: Essays on Courage, Desire, and Belonging.” We take turns answering fun questions like, “What does a world without story look like?” Grab a cup of tea and join us for the new episode of Unlocking Us.

“Black Magic” is our first organization-wide read for 2021. I found @chadsand’s book to be a daring and transformative read. Not only did the stories and interviews in “Black Magic” forever change how I think about leadership and culture, they challenged me as a parent, friend, and citizen. I can’t wait for you to hear this conversation on the Dare to Lead podcast.
