Mandy Teefey Instagram – A new Media and Teen Health Report published by the Center for Scholars and Storytellers (CCS) demonstrates that challenging yet realistic stories empower youth to learn more about mental health.
CCS conducted two studies studies investigating how 13 Reasons Why may affect teen mental health. The findings show that an overwhelming majority of teens who watched the show searched for resources online and spoke with a family member or friend about the topics portrayed in the series.
These findings are important to the ongoing conversation that content creators, educators, medical professionals and parents need to be having about supporting teen mental health. We must normalize talking about mental health by bringing together scholars and content creators, to unlock the power of research-informed storytelling.
