We’re missing the girls’ grandfather, whom we lost two years ago today. Love you, dear Gampy.
Happy Easter from Texas

I’m remembering @nancydavisreagan this week as the @reaganfoundation celebrates her 100th birthday. Here we shared a sweet moment at an event for The Heart Truth, where Mrs. Reagan used her iconic style to raise awareness about heart disease in women. We miss her and the good work she did for our country.

President Bush and I are saddened and angered by the senseless violence and loss of life occurring to those peacefully protesting for freedom in Burma.
In recent years, democratic gains gave hope that Burmese leaders were building a free and open society. Instead, the Burmese military leadership prefers to return to the days of fear, poverty, and oppression. Hundreds of innocent people have been detained and jailed for exercising their rights to freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. Many have been brutally beaten or killed. The world is watching these shameful abuses of human rights, and we condemn them.
Through our work with the Bush Institute’s Liberty and Leadership Program, George and I have come to know many young Burmese leaders — including former political prisoners, members of parliament, and journalists — who believe that Burma should be a free and open democracy. They are deeply concerned for their country. And they worry about those who were already suffering before the coup — the Rohingya, and those affected by the challenges of the global pandemic.
The people of Burma want freedom. We see them fighting for it today. Free nations have a duty to stand with the Burmese people. It is our moral obligation to speak out against violations of human rights like the ones on the streets in Yangon and other cities. It is also in the United States’ interest to see Burma’s freedom advocates succeed. George and I stand with them, and we support their brave efforts.

Each year, nearly two billion birds migrate through Texas. Darker skies can prevent these birds from colliding with buildings and other structures. Join me in helping our feathered friends by turning off your non-essential lights at night during Texas’ peak spring bird migration period of April 19 – May 7.
More with @dallasnews in the link in my profile. #LightsOutTexas #TexanbyNature @texanbynature @cornellbirds
The spring bird migration is underway!
Did you know that 1 in 3 birds migrating through the U.S. during the spring passes through Texas? That’s approximately one billion birds that travel through our state!
Most of these birds migrate at night and can become disoriented by the bright lights put off by cities. They crash into buildings and structures, dying at an alarming rate.
Here’s how you can help our flying friends reach their destinations safely: turn out all non-essential lights from 11 pm – 6 am every night through June 15 – especially now through May 7, the peak migration period.

“Faces of Hope,” President George W. Bush, 2013.
During a trip to Zambia in 2013, President @georgewbush and Mrs. @laurawbush spent time with women at the Mosi Oa Tunya Clinic who were being screened for cervical cancer. After returning home, President Bush honored the brave women he met there by painting “Faces of Hope.”
This #WorldCancerDay, we are celebrating @pepfar screening over 1 MILLION women living with HIV for cervical cancer in sub-Saharan Africa through the Go Further partnership with the Bush Institute (@thebushcenter), PEPFAR, @unaidsglobal, and @Merck. Tap the link in our bio to learn more.
We asked our @thebushcenter Liberty and Leadership Scholars to share what they would like the world to know regarding what is happening in Burma. Here are their updates from the frontlines (link in profile): https://www.bushcenter.org/publications/articles/2021/02/liberty-and-leadership-scholars-burma-updates.html

Inam is one of more than 3.6 million refugees who has resettled in Turkey since fleeing the 2011 war in Syria. With her four children in tow, Inam first fled to Egypt, then Dubai, before landing in Istanbul to figure out her new life as head of household and breadwinner for her family.
Like Inam, more than 90% of the refugees in Turkey don’t live in refugee camps and are instead working to integrate into their host cities’ vibrant societies. Inam is a talented cook with more than 30 years of at-home experience with Syrian cuisine, and she found instant success selling falafel at the local farmers market in her community.
