This is an emergency.⁣
⁣
The situation aboard the search and rescue ship, the Ocean Viking, is worsening by the hour. ⁣
⁣
The ship, operated by our partner @sosmediterranee, has 572 survivors onboard, all rescued from dangerously unseaworthy boats in the Mediterranean. ⁣
⁣
Despite repeated calls for assistance, the ship still hasn’t been asigned a port. Without this permission, they must remain at sea. ⁣
⁣
Whilst they wait, the rescued people must remain on the deck of the ship, exposed to the elements. It is beyond imagination. Inevitably, tensions and exhaustion are high. Yesterday evening, a man in acute psychological distress jumped overboard.⁣
⁣
To make matters worse, the ship will run out of pre-packed 24-hour food kits tomorrow and will not be able to fulfil all survivors’ nutritional needs by Saturday. ⁣
⁣
It is not only a moral obligation to swiftly provide a Place of Safety to people rescued at sea, it is a legal duty. ⁣
⁣
We stand with @sosmediterranee to call on European members states to show solidarity and support coastal states. Maritime authorities cannot leave hundreds of people in such dire conditions. A solution must be found now. | Posted on 08/Jul/2021 21:06:38
