Samm Levine Instagram – Many moons ago, I threw a little Oscars viewing party at my home. I was shooting a movie at the time, and invited several of my fellow castmates to attend. As a very sharp 19-year-old host, I had only the best stuff on hand to serve my guests: a vegetable platter, Smirnoff Ice, and Twinkies. Naturally, the Twinkies were a big hit. Towards the end of the show, my pal @chrisevans and I decided to split the last one. He pulled the wrapper off and cut it down the middle. But something must’ve distracted me, because I forgot to eat my half. Oops. The party ended, and I decided to leave cleaning up till the next day. Upon rediscovering my uneaten Twinkie half some 12 hours later, I was a little surprised to see its appearance and texture hadn’t changed in any way. I mean, if you’ve ever left bread out overnight, you know you’re going to wake up to stale bread. Now most of us have heard the rumor that “Twinkies never see the inside of an oven. They’re entirely lab-created and they last forever.” So I got curious. I wanted to see what that same Twinkie half would look like after a week of sitting on my table. Then a week became a month. And eventually a whole year. And so on… It wound up living on top of my fridge, untouched by anyone for the rest of its life. This Twinkie has survived two moves, several presidents, and now a pandemic. I cannot tell you exactly when it started to look the way it does now, but I can say it looked mostly “fresh” for almost a decade. Even so, please take a moment to be horrified by how good this (actually-was-baked-in-an-oven) Twinkie looks on its 20th birthday.
