Christy Turlington Instagram – I may be better known as a model of the 90’s but I was always proud to have worked in and experienced the industry in the previous decade. I started to shoot regularly for Vogue in 1985 when Grace Mirabella was editor-in-chief of the magazine (1971-1988), who died on December 23rd at age 92. It was her Vogue that introduced me to the first photographers and editors who I would learn so much from at the start of my career. Arthur Elgort, Irving Penn, Steven Meisel, Denis Piel, Jade Hobson, Polly Mellen, Carlyne Cerf, Andrea Robinson. Mirabella had come from Diana Vreeland’s Vogue and somehow still represented that era even if she was hired to bring it into a modern time. I don’t know if I would or could have identified as a “modern woman” at 16 but that’s the role I started to play in 1985. Here are some glimpses of those days in honor of Grace Mirabella. The first and final cover photos were taken for Mirabella Magazine, which she started in 1989.
