Lisa Ray Instagram – Repost from @janicepariat using @RepostRegramApp – This winter, I read a book on winter, and it helped me make sense, in no small way, of these times. These pandemic-riddled times, these times of loss and precarity. “Wintering” by Katherine May is about the season, but it is also about the many winters we experience in our lives, the rejections and disappointments, the hard days and months, where we must retreat and tend, and lie fallow, and make our way more quietly through the world. I found wisdom here, and comfort, and a reinvigorated sense of how, truly, we live in seasons, and that winter, as she says—is “not the death of the life cycle, but the crucible for life.”
As we teeter on the edge of another covid wave, and things feel once again disrupted and uneven, here is a book to keep by your side. It helped me through the end of last year—and has been my faithful companion during the beginning of this one. This book, and walking, and winter—I write about their marvellous connections for @scroll_in. A piece that also serves as small reflection: we might like to imagine life as one eternal summer…but how important it is to learn to sometimes invite winter in.
