Lisa Ray Instagram – #REPOST @zaluckycontemporary with @get__repost__app Tazeen Qayyum: 𝘚𝘢𝘬𝘰𝘰𝘯 on view until March 19. ➰➰➰ “As one approaches the works in Sakoon, Tazeen Qayyum’s first solo exhibition in Toronto, what appear as detailed drawings of concentric patterns on paper, are in fact calligraphic renderings of a single word painstakingly repeated in archival ink radiating outwards from the stillness of the drawing’s centre. The text is in Urdu, the calligraphy precise and impeccable. Qayyum started working with text in 2013 after training in miniature painting at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. She listens to Qawwali (Sufi devotional singing) on headphones as she works, focusing on the music and the word she is contemplating while sitting on the material, curved over the work, pen in hand.
