Donisha Rita Claire Prendergast Instagram – Reminder to self: Don’t let them fool you. We Have the Right to Be Right. Art has a great response ability, especially in these days when the world has no other choice but to pause and face up to itself. Film, for me, is my tool of mass construction, my rebellion, my opportunity to start a conversation. Black Bodies has been able to do that. Born out of a feeling of anguish, pain, trauma and neglect, this film dives deep into your existence to try to find the words that can communicate an experience that far too many black and brown peoples all over the world have. It involves the viewer in the journey of a story that may or may not be their own, but inevitably becomes a piece of the fabric of their humanity. Written and Directed by visionary @directedbykells with a phenomenally moving poem written and performed by visual artist @komiolaf, Black Bodies moves you. The film had its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, winning the 2020 Shawn Mendez Changemaker award, as well as being named one of the top ten films of 2020. Most recently, we have been invited by Sundance Film Festival to screen in 2021! Another really huge accomplishment. These are truly amazing moments to experience as a filmmaker. Still, I pray that these moments live beyond the screen, and continue to inspire communities everywhere and defy expectations. May it be a tool used in corporate settings, government institutions and classrooms to create emotional insight that can shift perspectives, and be a voice for those who deserve to be heard. Donisha Rita Claire Prendergast Instagram – In May 2010, a grave miscarriage of Justice was executed by the Government of Jamaica with the help of the US, who had issued an extradition order for one man – Christoher Dudus Coke. The operation has come to be known at the Tivoli Gardens incursion. Dudus was not captured during this operation, which was surveilled by a US aircraft to ensure their forces on the ground were protected. Instead, almost 200 people in the community of Tivoli Gardens were massacred and summarily labelled criminals in the eyes of the world. Fathers, sons, Mothers, Sisters… somebody’s child. The statement ‘Innocent until proven guilty’ was not a consideration during the incursion. There were no trials, no judge, no jury… just security forces, armed with guns and inflated egos who were empowered to kill at will. Many families lost loved ones, some of who have yet to receive the bodies for burial. Even after a National inquiry and evidence of negligence and gross mis-conduct, there has been no compensation, no closure, no justice… 10 years later.
