Art has a great response ability, especially in these days when the world has no other choice but to pause and face up to itself. Film, for me, is my tool of mass construction, my rebellion, my opportunity to start a conversation. Black Bodies has been able to do that. Born out of a feeling of anguish, pain, trauma and neglect, this film dives deep into your existence to try to find the words that can communicate an experience that far too many black and brown peoples all over the world have. It involves the viewer in the journey of a story that may or may not be their own, but inevitably becomes a piece of the fabric of their humanity. Written and Directed by visionary @directedbykells with a phenomenally moving poem written and performed by visual artist @komiolaf, Black Bodies moves you. The film had its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, winning the 2020 Shawn Mendez Changemaker award, as well as being named one of the top ten films of 2020. Most recently, we have been invited by Sundance Film Festival to screen in 2021! Another really huge accomplishment. These are truly amazing moments to experience as a filmmaker. Still, I pray that these moments live beyond the screen, and continue to inspire communities everywhere and defy expectations. May it be a tool used in corporate settings, government institutions and classrooms to create emotional insight that can shift perspectives, and be a voice for those who deserve to be heard.
