Ryan McCartan Instagram – This is one of the last pictures ever taken of me as Hans – unbeknownst to me. On Broadway I played my “closing show” on a random Wednesday, without knowing it was over, because the pandemic hit, and closed our show. Then I got the opportunity to play the role on the road, and on the eve of what should have been my final performance, got sick with something we thought might be COVID, and per protocol, had to be out of the show until I was cleared to come back. The clearance process took longer than what I had left of my run, and I find myself once again leaving Arendelle without officially saying goodbye. The heartbreak of making it so close to getting my final bow and still missing it is genuinely excruciating.
But.
The pain of the way it ended doesn’t come close to the joy of how it went. The quality of people I met and spent time with on the road, the quality of work I feel we did on that stage every night, and the quality of care I took to soak up every moment – knowing full well sometimes things can end before you think they will – all immeasurable. I am sad about how it ended, but I am woefully unprepared to process how incredibly happy I am about how it went. To the touring company of Frozen: do not ever forget the power you hold to unanimously change someone’s life for the better.
