Lisa Ray Instagram – @paaprikastore works diligently at highlighting heirloom crafts from regions around India and marrying them with wearable, sustainable fabrics, like this authentic (there’s a lot of let’s say ‘dilution’ of traditional Kalamkari techniques in the market) natural Kalamkari saree with a gorgeous Pallu – depiction of a woman and bird deep in conversation. This sari was handmade by artisans in Sri Kalahasthi, Andhra Pradesh. Natural Kalamkari involves 23 steps (that’s right TWENTY THREE!) of cleaning, drying, bleaching, starching, hand painting and more. I think of the process of transmission and the artisan’s hands, the same hands that finally immerse the Kalamkari fabric in the Swarnmukhi river which bestows the fabric – initiation like – with a unique red hue that no other river water offers.
