Sara Watkins Instagram – Dennis Caplinger’s fluid and seemingly effortless musicianship and personal integrity were an enormous influence on me. It took some convincing from my parents, and many phone calls pestering him, but at some point Dennis agreed to teach me fiddle. He lived about 10 minutes from our house and every couple weeks mom would drive me over his house. He’d open the big garage door and we’d sit in a couple chairs and he’d teach me how to compose solos, how to practice, and how to strategize. I was 8 years old but Dennis never talked down to me. He wasn’t impressed by the kid things I might say that made other grown-ups laugh or think I was cute. He was serious and treated me serious and I adored him for it. He was a foundational giant in my life and had a big heart. I am so grateful for his teaching and good example on into my adulthood. Rest In Peace Dennis.
