That bleary eyed, jet lagged, discovery of far away towns. @seancwatkins and I are on a quick trip to Denmark to be a part of @tonderfestival concert series (in lieu of their legendary festival). Then we walked around this cute town in search of essentials incase our luggage doesn’t show up for a while. I tried to get some practice in during her nap and heard her sweet footsteps come down the stairs much earlier than I’d hoped. I was promptly told by my daughter that the fiddle is annoying and I should try play quieter. Listen kid, I feel you. I was given 10 or 15 more mins in of practice while she dozed on my lap and my heart went boom.

I’ve know John Moore since I was 3 when he, Julie Moore and Dennis Caplinger were playing their weekly residency at That Pizza Place as the band “bluegrass Etc.” If you’ve heard any of @nickelcreek tell our stories, you’ve heard us talk about John and Dennis. It is a privilege to share so much life with people I love and respect. We lost Dennis last week and I was glad to get to celebrate his life and musical influence, as well as that of Byron Berline’s at the @summergrasssd festival this weekend. ❤️

Dennis Caplinger’s fluid and seemingly effortless musicianship and personal integrity were an enormous influence on me. It took some convincing from my parents, and many phone calls pestering him, but at some point Dennis agreed to teach me fiddle. He lived about 10 minutes from our house and every couple weeks mom would drive me over his house. He’d open the big garage door and we’d sit in a couple chairs and he’d teach me how to compose solos, how to practice, and how to strategize. I was 8 years old but Dennis never talked down to me. He wasn’t impressed by the kid things I might say that made other grown-ups laugh or think I was cute. He was serious and treated me serious and I adored him for it. He was a foundational giant in my life and had a big heart. I am so grateful for his teaching and good example on into my adulthood. Rest In Peace Dennis. This is the first year I’ve stopped to think about winter solstice. I didn’t think I would “do” anything for it, but I have found myself reaching for a candle or two. I have just lit them and am thinking about how growth requires rest. All of nature needs rest. I’m so grateful to be a musician, for the community and shelter it provides. So grateful for you all for following me along in my various ventures. Grateful for time with family. Grateful for the opportunity to rest. Happy Holidays everyone! I love you. We are very sad to say that due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ve had to reschedule our New York and Norwalk shows to May 6th and 7th respectively. All prior tickets will be honored at the new date.
