Sara Watkins Instagram - I can’t wipe the smile off my face. It is our great pleasure to announce Nickel Creek’s fifth studio album, “Celebrants,” an 18 track exploration of togetherness to be released in totality on March 24th! Today, you can listen to the first single, “Strangers,” and pre-order the album [link in bio]. If you happened to log into one of the live streams we did early in 2021, you saw us at the very beginning of the process. There were many trips across the country to write and make demoes, a constantly evolving shared-note of lyrics, and life-affirming collaboration with heroes @mikeelizondojr on bass and Eric Valentine (@nerdentine) in the producer’s (and engineer’s) chair, culminating in four weeks at RCA Studio A in Nashville. As much fun as we’ve had making music together over the years, this project broke the joy meter. We’re very proud of the results, and can’t WAIT to share them with you.

Sara Watkins Instagram - A few days ago I noticed my violin sounded strange and found an enormous crack leading down from the F hole to the base of my instrument. Terrible feeling. So Fortunately for me, @jeffpicker recommended I call @KCstrings in Kansas City and they fixed me RIGHT up. Anton met me on a Monday and he and Aiden fixed my fiddle up beautifully!! It sounds like it’s old self again, pre-crack. And they even let me borrow one of their beautifully made Krutz violins. THANK YOU FOR SAVING ME IN TOUR @k.c.strings!

I made this first clip for Sean and Chris because I was proud to have made strides on something that had previously felt beyond my abilities (see 1/3 in this series). 3/3 is a good version of the part. (Always room for improvement of course:). The part is still challenging, I imagine I will be giving the pitch regular tune-ups (especially that sung G note while playing F#) for the duration of the tour. But is really satisfying when I get it right! It feels good to post this sort of stuff and hear that it’s encouraging or enlightening to some! Really excited to play all this stuff on TOUR!!!! Sara Watkins Instagram - I tried to get some practice in during her nap and heard her sweet footsteps come down the stairs much earlier than I’d hoped. I was promptly told by my daughter that the fiddle is annoying and I should try play quieter. Listen kid, I feel you. I was given 10 or 15 more mins in of practice while she dozed on my lap and my heart went boom.

I’ve know John Moore since I was 3 when he, Julie Moore and Dennis Caplinger were playing their weekly residency at That Pizza Place as the band “bluegrass Etc.” If you’ve heard any of @nickelcreek tell our stories, you’ve heard us talk about John and Dennis. It is a privilege to share so much life with people I love and respect. We lost Dennis last week and I was glad to get to celebrate his life and musical influence, as well as that of Byron Berline’s at the @summergrasssd festival this weekend. ❤️

Sara Watkins Instagram - Last night in Dublin we were honored by the presence of musical giants: Paul Brady and Andy Irvine. The music they have made together and separately resonates deeply with me (as it does with so many people!) and it was such a gift to get to have a guinness with them and as Paul said, shoot the shit.
Sara Watkins Instagram - When I stopped in to give my aunt Joanie a CD last week she gasped at the title and said, “Oh my stars! Is it called Under the Pepper Tree?” Later that day she sent me this picture of my brother and me. We’ve had two family reunions and countless birthday celebrations under this tree. We’ve camped under it, I have admired it my whole life, and I’m happy to say it still stands in what is now Joanie’s backyard. The description she wrote way back then made us all smile.   #UnderThePepperTree has been out for one week! I’ve been amazed at the response thus far. Thanks to everyone who’s listened.

Sara Watkins Instagram - 1/3 I filmed this in December when I realized I was having to learn-how-to-learn some of these more challenging new bits of @nickelcreek music. Sometimes I feel like since I’ve been a fiddler for a while I “should” be able to just play whatever I want without too much trouble. Or I get embarrassed when I have to do really foundational work to truly get a handle on what I’m trying to do. But that’s where the first victories are! I’m SO grateful to have had teachers and mentors who taught me to break things down. WAY DOWN. This clip is from a day back in December when I was preparing for our first shows in the UK. This is the first of three clips I made working on this new @nickelcreek tune called “Going Out.” I wasn’t able to sing while playing and then I realized I wasn’t even comfortable with the *rhythm of the vocal part. So I decided first to work on the rhythm and then worry about notes later. I didn’t need sheet music for the tune but found it helpful to *see where the vocal rhythm fell in relation to the fiddle melody, so I wrote both parts out together and that was my gateway to this clip of early progress.

Sara Watkins Instagram - Dennis Caplinger’s fluid and seemingly effortless musicianship and personal integrity were an enormous influence on me. It took some convincing from my parents, and many phone calls pestering him, but at some point Dennis agreed to teach me fiddle. He lived about 10 minutes from our house and every couple weeks mom would drive me over his house. He’d open the big garage door and we’d sit in a couple chairs and he’d teach me how to compose solos, how to practice, and how to strategize. I was 8 years old but Dennis never talked down to me. He wasn’t impressed by the kid things I might say that made other grown-ups laugh or think I was cute. He was serious and treated me serious and I adored him for it. He was a foundational giant in my life and had a big heart. I am so grateful for his teaching and good example on into my adulthood. Rest In Peace Dennis. When I was about 8, he sold me my first good fiddle - a 3/4 size. It was way too big for me for at least a year or two but it sounded great and I was so proud that I got it from Byron. That’s the one I’m playing in these first two photos. Alison Kraus was playing our favorite local festival called Follows Camp, and Byron organized a jam so all of us kids could play with her. Byron, his wife Bette and daughter Becca were always welcoming and my heart and love are with them. I remember going to their house shortly after the Northridge earthquake and he told stories of near misses and mentioned after the quake, the water level of his pool was a foot lower, and all the fruit on that side of the orange tree had been knocked to the ground. Seemingly from a big wave. It’s funny the things that stick with you. If we came to one of Byron’s shows, be it with “The LA Fiddle Band” or “California” or anything else, he’d almost always invite us up to play on a tune with them. It made me want to work so I’d be deserving of the opportunity if and when the next chance came in hopes he’d see that I’d been practicing. Throughout his long influential life, Byron took so many of us young players under his wing and taught us about performing and jamming by example. I’m so grateful for his contribution to my life, and for his bow arm that, to me, defined his style. This record is a celebration of 20 years of Watkins Family Hour. 20 years ago, Flanagan at @largolosangeles invited @seancwatkins and me to do a monthly show where we could play old covers, try out new songs and invite guests to join us. This monthly residency quickly became something very special - a way to dig into the incredibly diverse and inspiring creative scene in LA. This record commemorates two decades of the profoundly special community we found at @largolosangeles. We are joined by Fiona Apple, @jacksonbrowne, @ilovelucius, @gaby_moreno, @madicunningham, Jon Brion, @williewatsongs and @benmonttench on Vol. II. The special guests represent some of whom we met in the early days and some more recently. A huge thank you to @tylerchester and David Boucher who produced this record alongside us. I have just lit them and am thinking about how growth requires rest. All of nature needs rest. I’m so grateful to be a musician, for the community and shelter it provides. If you happened to log into one of the live streams we did early in 2021, you saw us at the very beginning of the process. There were many trips across the country to write and make demoes, a constantly evolving shared-note of lyrics, and life-affirming collaboration with heroes @mikeelizondojr on bass and Eric Valentine (@nerdentine) in the producer’s (and engineer’s) chair, culminating in four weeks at RCA Studio A in Nashville. As much fun as we’ve had making music together over the years, this project broke the joy meter. We’re very proud of the results, and can’t WAIT to share them with you.

It took some convincing from my parents, and many phone calls pestering him, but at some point Dennis agreed to teach me fiddle. He lived about 10 minutes from our house and every couple weeks mom would drive me over his house. He’d open the big garage door and we’d sit in a couple chairs and he’d teach me how to compose solos, how to practice, and how to strategize. I was 8 years old but Dennis never talked down to me. When I was about 8, he sold me my first good fiddle - a 3/4 size. It was way too big for me for at least a year or two but it sounded great and I was so proud that I got it from Byron. That’s the one I’m playing in these first two photos. Alison Kraus was playing our favorite local festival called Follows Camp, and Byron organized a jam so all of us kids could play with her. Byron, his wife Bette and daughter Becca were always welcoming and my heart and love are with them. I remember going to their house shortly after the Northridge earthquake and he told stories of near misses and mentioned after the quake, the water level of his pool was a foot lower, and all the fruit on that side of the orange tree had been knocked to the ground. Seemingly from a big wave. It’s funny the things that stick with you. If we came to one of Byron’s shows, be it with “The LA Fiddle Band” or “California” or anything else, he’d almost always invite us up to play on a tune with them. It made me want to work so I’d be deserving of the opportunity if and when the next chance came in hopes he’d see that I’d been practicing. Throughout his long influential life, Byron took so many of us young players under his wing and taught us about performing and jamming by example. I’m so grateful for his contribution to my life, and for his bow arm that, to me, defined his style. I have so many memories of being around Byron, I wish I had more photos, but I’m grateful for these which my parents and aunt Joanie recently sent my way.

When I was about 8, he sold me my first good fiddle - a 3/4 size. It was way too big for me for at least a year or two but it sounded great and I was so proud that I got it from Byron. That’s the one I’m playing in these first two photos. Alison Kraus was playing our favorite local festival called Follows Camp, and Byron organized a jam so all of us kids could play with her. Byron, his wife Bette and daughter Becca were always welcoming and my heart and love are with them. I remember going to their house shortly after the Northridge earthquake and he told stories of near misses and mentioned after the quake, the water level of his pool was a foot lower, and all the fruit on that side of the orange tree had been knocked to the ground. Seemingly from a big wave. It’s funny the things that stick with you. If we came to one of Byron’s shows, be it with “The LA Fiddle Band” or “California” or anything else, he’d almost always invite us up to play on a tune with them. It made me want to work so I’d be deserving of the opportunity if and when the next chance came in hopes he’d see that I’d been practicing. Throughout his long influential life, Byron took so many of us young players under his wing and taught us about performing and jamming by example. I’m so grateful for his contribution to my life, and for his bow arm that, to me, defined his style.
