I thought I’d share some post-book reflections since I haven’t been sharing much online this year which is a stark contrast to the book in which I shared, um, EVERYTHING 🤪 it has really taken me aback how much I’ve wanted to retreat and be quiet since publishing the book. I thought I’d be all career career career, next next next. Instead all I’ve wanted to do is BE with animals and nature and other people’s books!! Takes a very spicy invitation to get me to leave my house lately. I think this shift has a lot to do with the peace writing my story down gave me. Much of the book was written from the perspective of little me who was SO angry about the past. I mean she was running the whole show at times and the book was her space to speak her truth, to rail about past grievances and to make some sense out of a messy time in life. There is just something about putting words to a situation that helps you accept it. Publishing the book was a huge relief. Let go of so much anger. Started a new chapter. And my younger self is a peaceful energy now, and I know feels taken care of by this book. I feel really liberated creatively and excited to write something new, which I will do, soon.
I also wanted to pass on some words of wisdom from Natasha who you might remember from the book, about the role of art. Every now and then I panic that I overshared in the book, that it was a bit too raw & nasty. I expressed this anxiety to Natasha and suggested in future maybe I ought to tone my worst thoughts down, clean it up a bit. Her response was great! “With all due respect, bollocks to that”, she said, “there is no point writing anything down if it doesn’t create ripples, no movie worth making if it doesn’t disturb someone somewhere”. As an artist, I fully subscribe to that! I would like to be shaken and woken up by books. So, here’s to holding nothing back. | Posted on 21/Jun/2022 00:28:19
