I didn’t know I was pregnant with my daughter until 7 weeks in. I’d gotten off birth control, my cycle was nuts, we were about to start trying to get pregnant. And then, lo and behold, I was. I’m not irresponsible, or uneducated, or whatever. I just truly did not know I was pregnant. So my first trip to the OB I got to hear a heartbeat. I was thrilled. And I also realized that ‘heartbeat laws’ are absurd. Last year, we lost a pregnancy. It was beyond crushing. The worst existential pain. Thanks to @revmikek and other support, I mostly got through it. To imagine being in that situation, and having my body and motherhood questioned, more than I was already questioning it myself, would have been more than I could handle. This is what this ruling will do. It will literally criminalize women’s bodies. This is not hyperbole. Abortion is healthcare, it is bodily autonomy, it is not a decision to be second-guessed by people in congress or courts or strangers outside clinics. I think life is miraculous, I’m a church-goer, I’m so grateful to be a mom. All of this informs my belief in people’s right to choose what happens with their bodies. Donate to @abortionfunds , to @reprorights to @ppact . Scream from the rooftops. Demonstrate in the streets. Tell pharmaceuticals to make emergency contraceptives without absurdly low weight limits. @sarahtreem sent me these photos this week, and let me know that Sundance Theatre Lab is officially closed. I wish we had more spaces where creative people could get together and try stuff out. Where storytellers could work with actors and directors and just…play. With plays! The opportunity to work with Sarah, to compare notes with @mchernus and @satyasees , to laugh and dance and then put on a show just for us, that kind of space and time needs to be fostered. This is just a note to say thank you to all those who made the Lab possible for so many years. And a note to say thank you to all the people who keep making theatre.
