Evanna Lynch Instagram – Little Irish history tour with my Dad for @tourismireland 🌳🪨 My dad was a history teacher for over 30 years (I’m sure these pics will give his past pupils flashbacks…) so I thought it would be interesting to ask him what lesser known location he’d like to share with anyone interested in local Irish history. And his eyes lit up and he insisted we go visit the monastery in Monasterboice and this old cross! Which is actually very impressive when you realise how bloody ancient it is. Here are some facts from my dad:
🌳The cross in the pictures is St Muireadach’s Cross and is one of the finest surviving examples of early medieval Irish sculpture.
🪨 It’s situated amid the ruins of the ancient Irish monastery of Monasterboice in Co.Louth.
🌲Muireadach’s Cross is from the 10th century and is thought to have been called after Muireadach Mac Domhnall, one of the monastery’s most famous abbots who died in 923AD.
🗿The carvings on the cross depict scenes from the bible and may have been used by the monks to tell the story of creation and salvation to visitors to the monastery.
☘️Ancient Irish monasteries we’re often circular and had two distinctive features: a round tower and one or more high crosses, both of which you can see in these pics.
Check out my stories to see my dad explaining some of the scenes on the cross. His passion is very infectious ☺️ Thanks @tourismireland for encouraging me to rediscover some of the history of Co.Louth, we do have some cool things going on in the wee county.
