The statue of Edward Coulston being torn down in Bristol is proving to be one of the many moments in recent times that may symbolise some change. I had no idea what was happening as I witnessed it. It was a privilege to be there… while it also being a form of white privilege to be there as a white person chanting “I can’t breathe”… and not dying at the hands of racists. If the many statues that are now being removed all around the world of men that used the slave trade in the culmination of their enterprise… having them put in a museum with plaques detailing the atrocities they were complicit in… is better than having them celebrated on plinths in town squares and city centres. | Posted on 14/Jun/2020 19:17:51
