The statue of Edward Colston that was torn down in Bristol. Sir Geoffrey Palmer, a civil rights activist and professor in Edinburgh, argues that their statue of Henry Dundas should not be torn down, only that the wording on the plaque beneath the statue be changed. His argument being, if there’s no evidence of the atrocities that were committed by these slave traders, how can future generations learn about Britain’s huge role in the slave trade til 1833… At the same time, if we can get this type of information taught in our schools as compulsory… that is also how future generations can learn, TOGETHER, with children of all different races, in one classroom. Surely this could help eradicate the feeling that so many white people have of being threatened when presented with this info, if it’s taught to children when they are young? Sir Ian Holm passed today. In my opinion one of the best actors we’ve ever produced. Whether playing a villain or the warmest and kindest characters, he always caught your eye. My thoughts are with his family tonight x

I have no idea how this was deleted off my IG, only just noticed. The statue of Edward Coulston being torn down in Bristol is proving to be one of the many moments in recent times that may symbolise some change. I had no idea what was happening as I witnessed it. It was a privilege to be there… while it also being a form of white privilege to be there as a white person chanting “I can’t breathe”… and not dying at the hands of racists. If the many statues that are now being removed all around the world of men that used the slave trade in the culmination of their enterprise… having them put in a museum with plaques detailing the atrocities they were complicit in… is better than having them celebrated on plinths in town squares and city centres.
