As you begin your evolution away from tennis I just wanted to take a second and write a letter on what your career has meant to me, and how it will continue to inspire me every day of my life.

When I first became a ride or die Serena fan it was the Australian Open 2007. I had just begun my love affair with professional tennis at Wimbledon in 2006, a few months before you returned to take the tennis world by storm. What I remember most about your run to the title at the Australian Open 2007, was the fact that the only person who never doubted you could win the title, was you. Ranked #81 in the world, you decided that losing wasn’t an option. Tennis needed to remember that you were it’s greatest champion. And from 3-5 down in the second set to Petrova in the third round, you never looked back. When you crushed World Number 1 Sharapova, the world was shocked, but you weren’t. You knew it would happen. You always did. Your belief in yourself never wavered, and you made it your mission to prove every doubter wrong, so you did just that.

I have striven to use that mentality in my daily life, as an actor, director, writer and as a human. People have doubted me from day one, but I never did. I know what I am capable of, and I have never settled for less than my best. And I learned that from you. You can only do your best, and your best is pretty damn spectacular.

Your willingness to share your passion with us, and wear your emotions on your sleeve, has inspired thousands of people to do the same. I am only one of thousands, but your impact has a resounding effect on people all over the world. That is your legacy. The fact that this one gay, chubby, passionate creator in LA is inspired by you every day is proof that there are millions of others just like me. People who have been doubted, been questioned, but rise up in resilience and deliver spectacular things time and time again.

Your tennis career may be closing, but your impact on the world has just begun. I will watch all your greatest highlights on YouTube again and again.
