Josh Brolin Instagram – I walk into a coffee shop and order an espresso. I’ve just gotten money out of the ATM. I take out a new bill and hand it to the cashier. He pulls it up to the light and bends the bill, then he looks at me as if I’ve just gotten out of prison for counterfeiting and once out got right back to the crime at hand. He knows the ink still isn’t dry so he runs it against the counter, then he looks me straight in the eyes again. He’s a small guy and there’s no way he could take me but the shame he’s throwing at me right now is actually making me shrivel. For a second, I navigate through my memories for any wrong doing in the last little while I might have sunk into. He waits patiently for me to cough it up — Fuck, I’m sorry. I know, man. It’s wrong and I had a clean slate. I had my chance and I blew it. Please forgive me. I won’t do it again. Please don’t call the police — but instead he decides to let me off, still never completely shrugging off the glue of guilt he’s thrown my way. He reticently makes the espresso, and puts it in a small black cup, and then gives me straight up, legal change. I walk out the door to an outside table and he stands in the doorway and watches me drink. Acting has done nothing for my social life.
