Josh Brolin Instagram – We didn’t get paid much but we knew we were doing something personal. A great story. What is more nutritious than a great story? Each of us had our valued place in the telling of that story. Even craft service. Everyone was equal. On set a family starts to form. You learn each other’s peccadilloes and niceties and no longer can you hide in the closet of your formalities: your unconscious, social habits. The platform raises the stakes: what are you made of and are you willing to get past your default tattletales and reveal who might be underneath? You have to open yourself up which is part of the survival of being away from family, from friends, the softness of home, familiarity, the ground of habit,the laughter of your children, the roar of a vintage motorcycle, your wife’s feet touching your leg under the covers at night. It’s a temporary mafia, a potpourri of misfits all playing make believe, each hoping to feel useful, each longing quietly for what might turn out a lesser love. #nocountryforoldmen

Josh Brolin Instagram – I walk into a coffee shop and order an espresso. I’ve just gotten money out of the ATM. I take out a new bill and hand it to the cashier. He pulls it up to the light and bends the bill, then he looks at me as if I’ve just gotten out of prison for counterfeiting and once out got right back to the crime at hand. He knows the ink still isn’t dry so he runs it against the counter, then he looks me straight in the eyes again. He’s a small guy and there’s no way he could take me but the shame he’s throwing at me right now is actually making me shrivel. For a second, I navigate through my memories for any wrong doing in the last little while I might have sunk into. He waits patiently for me to cough it up — Fuck, I’m sorry. I know, man. It’s wrong and I had a clean slate. I had my chance and I blew it. Please forgive me. I won’t do it again. Please don’t call the police — but instead he decides to let me off, still never completely shrugging off the glue of guilt he’s thrown my way. He reticently makes the espresso, and puts it in a small black cup, and then gives me straight up, legal change. I walk out the door to an outside table and he stands in the doorway and watches me drink. Acting has done nothing for my social life.
