Violence erupting in streets, people vacating their homes carrying only whatever they could manage on their backs, just because they found themselves in the “wrong” side of the border. It was a good challenge trying to balance how Azra was feeling in the moment, and showing what was happening around her, while being sensitive to how much violence could be implied in a children’s book. The rough and the final. Text by @shirinshamsi1 #themoonfromdehradun #illustration #picturebook #indiapakistan #1947 #dehradun #kidlitart

This was the first spread I worked on for ‘The Moon from Dehradun’ 🌙 and also took the longest. It was the heaviest scene to draw to carry the reality of hoards of people having to flee across the border on trains, literally packed to the roofs of the carriages. I tried to show a little story with each of the individual people in the crowd, since they would’ve all had a unique experience going through the traumatic Partition.

This still being Azra’s story, it was important to show it from her point of view. I played with a few compositions before landing on this one, with the help of my art director on the project.

A print of this will be hung up at the Original Art Show by the Society of Illustrators in New York. If you’re around November 10 to February, feel free to drop by. I’m thrilled to be featured in their show.

Tarun Lak Instagram – ‘The Moon from Dehradun’ is out on shelves and online today.

Beautifully written by @shirinshamsi1 , published by @simonkids , the story is based on Shirin’s mother’s experience during the partition. I had the privilege of this being my picture book to illustrate.

I cannot stress enough how important this book was for me in its substance.

The story follows a girl named Azra who accidentally leaves her favorite doll behind when her family has to all of a sudden move from Dehradun to Lahore, in the midst of the Partition of India.

After diving in to research for the book and getting as much information and pictures from the Author’s family, I arrived at the design of the family here. This evolved a bit in some details as I got through the book.

Hope to share more in the coming weeks!
