Ann Shoket Instagram – I had the honor of interviewing Madeleine Albright in 2006. She walked in the room and immediately filled up the space with her commanding presence. I excitedly told her about the work I was doing then with teen girls and how they were strong, focused and preparing to lead our future…she looked at me over the top of her glasses in a way I generously describe as “firmly” and said “you’re young, why aren’t you doing more, why aren’t you more successful?” I was stung. I thought I was doing pretty great as the executive editor of a big-time mag. But I gathered myself and said “I’m doing better than my mother, who did better than her mother. And I’m helping the next generation do better than me.” I’ve thought a lot about this moment over the years…I don’t think she meant to be unkind, even though it felt that way at the time. I think she was impatient for progress, for equality, and for real POWER for women. It’s not enough to make small incremental gains.
