These past couple of years I have intentionally given myself the space to be able to isolate, insulate, interrogate, internalize, introspect, involve myself in evolving myself. In the silent solace somehow finding a supple surrender, a soulful submission to the sanctuary of stillness. I have witnessed myself challenge even the ideas that I had of myself in pursuit of a greater over standing of my role in this physical manifestation as a human and the potential we have to navigate and create the conditions that frame our collective realities. So much things to say right now... I'll start with Give Thanks for this Truth: I don't fit into many boxes, I am easily misunderstood because I am hard to define and my inheritance comes from a place filled with warmth, grace, integrity and divine royalty. I am Donisha. 🦋 For this New Chapter, the life lessons that will feed generations through my Art and all the genuine and uncompromising Love & Support from Day One, I am truly Grateful. The legacy of colonialism is still very present and active. Today marks 68 years since the unjust destruction of Pinnacle, the first self sufficient community in Jamaica under the leadership of Leonard Howell, ‘The First Rasta’. Thousands of families were left homeless and helpless, generations never recovered, a legacy buried with time. Now, Jamaica as a brand and tourist destination benefits from the exploitation of the same things we were demonized for while they knowingly neglect their duty to preserving the heritage and legacy of the root, Pinnacle. As the stains of past injustices continue to present themselves it calls into question the safety of our history if we don’t actively Right it. Donisha Rita Claire Prendergast Instagram - ROYAL RITA After leaving high school, long before Grandma @officialritamarley was touring the world with my grandfather, she studied practical nursing with the intention of being a healer. In the 70’s, she performed in Jamaica’s National Pantomime ‘Brashana O’ as an actress. She is a multi hyphenate artist, visionary, businesswoman, healer and matriarch of our family and so much more. She has never been limited to any standard definitions. She doesn’t know how to fit in because she has always stood out. Through her confidence, I learnt how to embrace the truth that we don’t have to conform to be respected and that you can be many things, including misunderstood and still be right. The first time I recognized my voice was while speaking on a national stage in 2007 in Soweto, South Africa during the Africa Unite Earthday celebrations for my Grandfather being produced and curated by my Grandma. I watched her create magic, build a movement and harness and channel the dreams and aspirations of Africa’s youth toward actualization with guidance, access and a renewed sense of confidence as their greatest resource. She believed in my voice and my capacity to be heard and make impact even though I was unsure about what to say or how it would be received. She never had a doubt. After that trip, I left Howard University and my acting program to pursue studies in film. I was beginning to understand the power of controlling your narrative and how it interacts with the media. Since then, I have only grown more love and appreciation for the power of words in creating moments of impact and new realities as we aspire to Right Our Story. I am humbled and honoured to be able to speak on behalf of my Grandma and my family on occasions like these, guided by the inspiration of His & Her Majesty who reminds us of our Sovereignty and Divinity. Pinnacle stood for liberation to formerly enslaved African descendants who were seeking a space to heal from slavery and evolve on their own terms. They also farmed Ganja and sold it to the Indian indentured labourers who had replaced African labour on the plantations. Pinnacle was destroyed on May 23,1954 under the direction of Alexander Bustamante, now recognized as Jamaica’s first National hero. 8 years later on Aug 6, 1962 England grants Jamaica Independence. People running for their lives from police batons and brutality. Hardworking men, women with their children, even newborn babies … 3000 people had to take refuge in the caves, under the rocks and in the gutters and crevices of Jamaica where they would not be seen. Hundreds of others were arrested, children as young as 11 years old locked in cells and given sentences. Families separated, violated, traumatized. Many people suffered. Many are still suffering.
