Sid Sriram Instagram – I think explaining one culture’s form of music by using the vocabulary of another culture’s form of music is counterproductive. For example, trying to explain the concept of Raga by correlating it to the western concept of Mode is flawed (I used to do it when I was younger). So much dimension and nuance is fully lost in translation. And what is music without dimension and nuance? Not sure what the alternative is, and there should be an alternative because cross cultural conversation when it comes to music is beautiful and powerful. Maybe we try to explain things visually? Driving home at and exploring abstractions rather than trying to box things in for convenience. Here is a little round of Kalpana swaram in the raga Kannada

Forever indebted to my core unit (parents and sister) for instilling in me music, the desire to learn tirelessly, intensity, empathy and love. Blessed to get to learn from them every day.
