Dreama Walker Instagram – Today is my Grandmother’s birthday. She would have been 98 years old.
My first encounters with racism were the comments white folks said around me not knowing we were Latinos. That we (they) were unclean, had too many children, were poor, were loud, were criminals, etc.
I remember feeling such rage and confusion. My kid brain lashing out at times to tell people they were wrong and crying to my mother. I didn’t have the word ‘racism’ in my vocabulary, but that’s exactly what it was.
I wish that trend had not continued, but it is still ever present and if anything, more audacious than it has been in recent history.
Think about what you assume about people, how you treat them. Give people of color opportunities and platforms. You may not have witnessed it directly, but it has been taken away from them time and time again.
