When we did Queer as Folk we were just diving into these wonderfully flawed characters, focusing on great storytelling and forming a family which I think, coming from theatre, is one of the most important ingredients to a great show or film; Saying to another artist, you can be raw in front of me, naked in front of me, and get to work with respect to your craft and I am going to have your back.
I had no idea at the time I was actually playing the first full time, hard 6 on the kinsey scale, never in the closet, series regular lesbian character on television. Not until Girlfriends Magazine told me that in an interview I did with them.
Melanie was freedom. Melanie was gutsy. I hold her close to me because she is the closest, most personal character I ever played in my life. She was honest, loyal, loved with her entire heart and gave zero fucks what others thought about her.
At a time when the industry was freaking out about this script going around town called Queer as Folk, I too gave zero fucks what people thought about me going after the part. I knew I was built for the role, I knew it was mine and I think I even went into the final network audition and told the execs that; I’m your girl.
