Happy International Lesbian Day!! When we did Queer as Folk we were just diving into these wonderfully flawed characters, focusing on great storytelling and forming a family which I think, coming from theatre, is one of the most important ingredients to a great show or film; Saying to another artist, you can be raw in front of me, naked in front of me, and get to work with respect to your craft and I am going to have your back. I had no idea at the time I was actually playing the first full time, hard 6 on the kinsey scale, never in the closet, series regular lesbian character on television. Not until Girlfriends Magazine told me that in an interview I did with them. Melanie was freedom. Melanie was gutsy. I hold her close to me because she is the closest, most personal character I ever played in my life. She was honest, loyal, loved with her entire heart and gave zero fucks what others thought about her. At a time when the industry was freaking out about this script going around town called Queer as Folk, I too gave zero fucks what people thought about me going after the part. I knew I was built for the role, I knew it was mine and I think I even went into the final network audition and told the execs that; I’m your girl. Happy National Sons Day!!! I was sent an angel, a warrior and a gentleman with an artist’s spirit. I love his humble confidence. I love his sense of humor, his knowledge of nature at such a young age, his sensitivity and the way he can size up an adult in about three seconds. At three years old he was sitting at a table with a bunch of adults discussing the expansion of space and we were trying to figure out where space ends and he chimes in, “ Space ends in the future because it is constantly expanding”. We all sat and stared at him as he went back to his milkshake. My sweet Dashiell, I love you to the moon and back and around again and to infinity and beyond. I just know you will take all that power and grace you have been given and make the world a better place ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Five years ago today my Father passed away. I was so broken hearted, I felt like I was having a heart attack. I called my GP and after every test and EKG imaginable he said I had the heart of a 28 year and what was going on? I told him my father passed away and he said you truly have a broken heart- it’s a real thing. I still cry once in awhile at the most bizarre moments. I still talk to my father as if he is simply ‘waiting for me in the other room’. I keep him close and I know he is hovering around me and Dashiell as the fierce protector he always was. Grief is funny. True grief leaves a hole in your heart but over time you no longer fall into the hole, you simply learn to live with it. I guess this is the price we pay for loving. How lucky are we to love. This was my father’s last time at the beach, the day he taught Dashiell to fly a kite. Rip Daddy. We love you 💕

When Dashiell met Chasten Buttigieg 🙂 Someone sent me this picture and I just love it. Chasten was so great with Dashiell. I had picked Dashiell up from preschool to go to this event at the Abbey for his husband Pete. I was on the host committee and it was Pete’s first event in LA. I am so happy for them both now that they are parents. I can not Imagine anyone more suited for parenthood. Anyway, I will treasure this photo forever 💕🙏🏻💕
World Premiere at BroadStage of a new work by the Mark Morris Dance Group! The dancers were incredible! Choreography, beautiful! The colors were like sherbet exploded all over the stage with costumes by the wonderful Isaac Mizrahi. Music, Burt Bacharach- the lyrics of Hal David.. all of it was simply a love letter to Happiness and certainly what the world needs now. What made me cry however was the voice of an angel, the one and only Broadway star Marcy Harriel. Please support this production and the arts here in Los Angeles. Right now the world, adults and especially children need the arts more than ever. I do not see art as expendable, rather I see art as everything and a sign as to the health of a culture. Bravo to my friend Gregory Rae for sitting on the Board of BroadStage. What a great group of people who really care about the art scene here in LA❤️❤️❤️ #broadstage
Nika Shakarami, 17 years old. She went protesting and then went missing. Her face so full of hope, her entire life before her. I don’t know her and yet I know her, a young girl who wants to live free. I stand in awe of these young girls in Iran, risking their lives. I have attended more protests than I can count but I can tell you I never once felt my life was at risk. They know their life is at risk and they go anyway. They are the beginning of change and a symbol of hope. Nika died in the streets, after telling a friend she was being chased by police. The back of her skull was crushed as if beaten by a police baton. The security force/police in Iran have threatened her mother and have tried covering up the cause of Nika’s death. #nikashakarami #jinamahsaamini

I know there are many reasons to lose hope right now. I think we have all struggled in the last several years as we have witnessed changes in our country and our Government. The problem is when you lose hope you stop taking action to make things better because why.. it’s not worth it. So hope is powerful. My friend Todd here reminded me of how powerful it is during our trip to DC. He reminded me of all we have fought for over the last 18 years. I was reminded of Howard Zinn’s words about the arc of justice. I saw Dashiell read the passage above Lincoln with tears in my eyes. Tears that we made it through the pandemic, tears that I taught him how to read during that time and tears for how much hope Todd gave me that day. Our friendship has been one of passing hope back and forth between each other. I remember years ago Todd called me after he was stuck in a room down in Florida fighting with Republican lawyers over Chads. He was one of the Democratic lawyers. After that, I pulled him into the LGBT March on Washington, pulling him back into politics. Anyway, I will always remember this day. Never lose hope. Hope is dangerous to people who would like to control us. Hope makes you believe you can win. Hope tells you to vote and helps you encourage others to vote as well. We need to turn out the vote for the mid term elections. And not only do I hope we will, I know we will. #vote @whizzbangboom

Dashiell passed his Orange belt test!!! He has been going six days a week along with one private class every week working hard and he just loves it. He has the most wonderful teacher and has found such a great friend in class in Enzo. They are so supportive of each other. It’s very sweet. Way to level up Dashiell in belts, friendship and life!!
