If your reaction to the attempted murder of the speaker of the House’s husband, the attempted kidnapping of the speaker of the House, is to minimize, mock, or celebrate it, you’re telling us what you want instead of politics. You’re saying what you want instead of voting.
If Republicans do not want us to have elections anymore, don’t kid yourself that there is another good option. It is democracy or it’s not. And if it’s not, it’s violence and force.

One of the lessons that emerges quickly when you spent time looking at this history of the violent ultra-right here, not just internationally but here in the United States, one of the things that just comes home again and again is that fascist, violent authoritarian messaging very, very, very often comes with a big heaping helping of anti-Semitism.
…
Whatever you might have admired about Americans in the past, who confronted these things in the past, well, now is your chance to emulate what they did that you think was right.
Whatever you might have resented or been disappointed in in thinking about Americans in the past who didn`t rise to the occasion, who stuck their heads in the sand, who pretended it wasn`t happening, who let it slide, well, now is your chance to not emulate them because this is our turn with this stuff.

No longer respecting election results isn’t just about messing with elections themselves. It’s about a different kind of governance.

With the new conservative super majority on the Supreme Court, they are reaching way out this term, way, way out of their way to take cases that are expected to serve as a vehicle for them to: let state legislatures change election results, to get rid of affirmative action programs in education, to get rid of antidiscrimination civil rights laws that protect gay people, and to once and for all get rid of the crown jewel achievement of the United States civil rights movement, which, of course, is the Voting Rights Act.

It is amazing to think back on the prosecution of Michael Cohen and the mention of “Individual-1” and it seemed like surely Donald Trump was going to face actual accountability …and then it just kind of faded away. It is hard to stay a democracy when all forms of public service, large and small, come with threats of violence.
The threat of political violence takes normal people out of public life, which puts you on a very fast track to the end of democracy at a very practical level.
(Edited from the August 29, 2022 episode of the Rachel Maddow Show)
The way you argue for democracy is not just by pointing the finger at people that want violence and fascism saying, Whoa, that’s bad. That always works out badly.
You have to make the positive case that democracy is a good idea. That democracy can deliver meaningful, practical improvements in Americans lives.
And so we arrive at the midterm elections with a stark contrast in how the two major parties demonstrate their position on democracy.

And it’s working.
