Oliver Claffey Instagram – People seemed to enjoy the last meditation post, so here’s another:
Formal vs. Informal Practice
We don’t meditate for its own sake. We meditate to practice Mindfulness. Meditation, and all its wonderful varieties, are Formal Practices of Mindfulness. They require a dedicated time in our day, preferably every day and around the same time.
But this isn’t the only way to practice. Informal Practice can be useful for people who simply can’t make time to sit down every day and think about their breathing; there are days where the outside world is making more demands on your time than is typical.
On days such as these we can Informally Practice. Simply dedicate your attention solely to one task in your day. That’s it. However, it is your entire attention — no podcasts in your ear to distract you from the monotony, no television on in the background.
Lately I’ve been trying to take this approach with my training, meaning no headphones to keep me company on the lonely roadwork miles. Your mind will wander, but as always, the skill is in recognizing this and returning it to the present moment — and without Judgement.
Formal Practice can help teach you self-awareness and inner-calm. Informal Practice can help teach you to how to apply these concepts to your actual life.
