Last weigh-in: Featherweight – 146lbs / 66kg Next weigh-in: Bantamweight – 136lbs / 62kg December 17th is not only my Pro MMA debut, with @fccmma, but is also my first fight at bantamweight and marks the third weight class I’ll have competed in in combat sports. Having to watch what I eat, whilst making sure I consume enough for recovery, has helped me focus on what I need versus what I want. That’s a distinction we’re not always honest with ourselves about. And what I need is cake. And coffee. And maybe a good book, too. ☕x🏴☠️ For tickets to the event – Link in bio 🙈🙉🙊 #CaptainJack #MMA #BKFC

People seemed to enjoy the last meditation post, so here’s another: Formal vs. Informal Practice We don’t meditate for its own sake. We meditate to practice Mindfulness. Meditation, and all its wonderful varieties, are Formal Practices of Mindfulness. They require a dedicated time in our day, preferably every day and around the same time. But this isn’t the only way to practice. Informal Practice can be useful for people who simply can’t make time to sit down every day and think about their breathing; there are days where the outside world is making more demands on your time than is typical. On days such as these we can Informally Practice. Simply dedicate your attention solely to one task in your day. That’s it. However, it is your entire attention — no podcasts in your ear to distract you from the monotony, no television on in the background. Lately I’ve been trying to take this approach with my training, meaning no headphones to keep me company on the lonely roadwork miles. Your mind will wander, but as always, the skill is in recognizing this and returning it to the present moment — and without Judgement. Formal Practice can help teach you self-awareness and inner-calm. Informal Practice can help teach you to how to apply these concepts to your actual life. Meditation is a practice that has taken me years of trying, on and off, to make habitual. Now that it has become a part of my everyday life, I’d say it’s something every martial artist should be doing. Why? There’s multipe physiological and psychological benefits to meditation, but the most important for fighting is the honing and conscious directing of the Will. How? Find a quiet spot, sit in a manner you find relaxing, and focus on your breathing. Other ideas will occur. Other sensations will appear. The practice comes from acknowledging these thoughts and feelings and returning your attention to your breathing. Make time for yourself, only five minutes a day, and integrate this practice into your routine. If you can do it at the same time every day, it helps, but isn’t essential. If you find this helpful, give this post a like or share with someone who will! 🏴☠️ 📸 @julianarataphotography 👕 🩳 @co_alpha1 #MeditationMonday
Let’s keep talking meditation. People seem to find these posts useful and I still get questions regarding technique. First, don’t sweat the technique. It somewhat defeats the purpose. In my last post I mentioned that the skill of Mindfulness isn’t keeping your attention solely upon one thing, but in recognizing when that attention has wandered and bringing it back to that one thing – your breathe, your mantra, even a repetitive motion – without Judgement. What’s Judgement in this context? I’m talking about value judgements. In other words: framing something as good or bad. When your mind wanders in meditation it isn’t a good thing nor a bad thing, it simply is. Scolding yourself or deeming it a “failure” in your abilities is a Judgement, a negative one, and is most people’s automatic response when first trying out Mindfulness practices. This leads to further frustrations when the attention inevitably moves again and can be the reason that people give up early into their journey, now believing that meditation simply doesn’t work for them. Remember: it’s not good, it’s not bad, it simply is. Learning non-Judgemental framing is part of the work. 🙈🙉🙊 🏴☠️ 📸 @julianarataphotography #Mindfulness #Meditation #MixedMartialAlchemy
Jack Claffey fully believes in the power of martial arts, and when you mix that with a little bit of DragonBall Z, you get a fighter thats been seen on multiple continents in multiple combat sports for the viewing world. Jack is making his pro debut in the Bantamweight division against Marlon Jones and he plans to send a massive message to the MMA world. Will Jack get it done?
