Was the chief guest today at the (impressive) investiture ceremony of the prefects, head boy, head girls, house captains etc of my alma mater, #CathedralandJohnConnonSchool . It was held at the same venue (Birla Matushri Hall) as when I was invested a million years ago. Super nostalgic. Life comes a full circle. Was invited to school after the ceremony by the Principal, Vice Principal and a member of the Board of Governors. First attempt at a (proper) headstand after 38 years- earlier did it the gymnast’s way during school gymnastics. Been learning yoga for the last four weeks and my teacher (my amazing sister, Anu Bose) thought I could try this today. I know it is nowhere near perfect, but in these topsy turvy times, it’s good to look at things the wrong way up. Thank you, Didi. I was 8. He would take the morning off work and we’d go to watch test cricket at Wankhede. We used to enter from Marine Drive near Zaver Mahal. Park the car across the road and queue up to get into the stadium. The rule was simple : I had to always hold his index finger during the walk in. It used to be crowded but never suffocating. He had prepared my lunch box, water bottle and given me a cap for when the sun hit the west stand in the evening. My steps would quicken when I’d hear a roar from the crowds inside. The finger would restrain my speed. Up the stairs, into daylight and the thrill, the splendour of cricket bathed in sunshine with 20,000 people watching. It was only when we’d reached our seats that I was allowed to release the finger. I can never forget the sense of safety that finger gave me. It was as if once I held it I was cloaked in inter galactic protective armour. That’s the wonder of being the right kind of father. It makes your son Superman.

There was a time when I went on a #SatyajitRay films watching spree and Soumitrada was in most of them. So working with him in #15ParkAvenue felt surreal. Needless to say I incessantly asked questions about cinema, Ray, his working style etc. He answered everything with generosity and warmth. For most this was an annus horribilis. I have to say for me it was one of the best years of my career. #Bullbul released in the early days of the pandemic (there I am on set, sitting with its massively talented director, @anvita_dee ) and it garnered me my first @filmfare award at the end of the year. In the middle there has been filming for an English series with @netflix_in , a Hindi series and a Bengali series. Very satisfying. So, a happy new year. Remember, you never know what the future holds. Sometimes it can surprise you extremely pleasantly. Cheers.

She pushed me to box for school, play rugby for the Bombay Gym. She opened the entire library of books at home for me when I turned 10. She taught me how to pick wild flowers for the house. And she never entered the kitchen. Gender equality? We breathed it. My friends thought she was way cooler than I was – they came over more to hang with her than with me. Like all younger brothers, I spent my childhood craving your attention. Which, like all older sisters, you met with a mixture of scorn and indifference. But when our parents picked on me they did so gingerly knowing they had to deal with your wrath at them. Little wonder I heroine worshipped you. Was deep in the belly of a new film during Father’s Day, ergo…. Like all children it’s only when you look back that you realise your parents were pretty cool. As were the times, Baba was the breadwinner, but he also shopped for everything in the kitchen, was equally skilled at making crumb fried prawn cutlets as he was at making mutton chaanp, the smell of which would have us pleading an hour before it was ready. He spent relatively astonishing amounts of money on encyclopaedia for his kids (which we passed over for the latest Madonna CD liner notes), drove me to cricket matches two cracks after dawn, fed us with his hands till we were ridiculously old (think braces and bicycles), and told us tales of mischief from his childhood of forests and bridges. But most of all I remember him letting us sleep past the alarm, then lightly massaging us every morning so we would not wake but slowly unfurl, and slide uncomplainingly into a new school day. @anubose189
Wrapped my 5th film in 11 months. This one was as pleasurable as all the others. The icing on the cake(!) was the weather – cold, crisp, clear. I consider it the greatest good fortune of my life to spend it doing what I love. May this good fortune be visited on all who have a dream. Thank you @kunalkohli for your faith. And just so my father, Rupen Bose (who passed away 13 years ago), doesn’t feel left out. And because the bumblebee pullover 🙄 is such a hit.
