Excerpt from Music Business, 1st August 1964:
.
For five years “things have been moving cautiously for me,” said Nancy Wilson last week. The masterpiece of understatement came in the wake of the Capitol songbird’s first smash single ‘How Glad I Am’ (number 14 in the Pop 100 this week) and coverage in Time last week (and Newsweek this week) and a sensationally successful opening recently at Los Angeles’ venerable Coconut Grove.
.
“I went into the studio with the deliberate idea of cutting a top 40 kind of hit,” she said. “Actually though, I didn’t sing any differently than I ever do. It’s the material itself that did it and of course the arrangement. As far as my singing goes, I think it’s always been pop singing really. “People have labelled me as jazz. I don’t like that designation. I want to be able to reach everybody, not just the jazz crowd. And besides, who is to say what a jazz singer is anyway? If it’s scat singing, I don’t qualify, because I’ve never scatted, never!”

‘Stolen Kisses’ never stoops to become a generation-gap satire like The Graduate, released in America. In France, the May 1968 student demonstrations grew to include factory workers, civil servants, and white-collar professionals.
Listen to Chrissie’s cover of ‘Que Reste-t’il De Nos Amours?’ on all streaming platforms now. New album ‘Valve Bone Woe’ out September 6th.
Few compositions are as genuinely melancholy as ‘You Don’t What Love Is’. Don Raye’s piercing lyrics accentuate the heartbreaking feeling staged by De Paul. You don’t know what love is, he claims, until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues. As one critic puts it, “the lyrics draw out the exquisite pain!”
.
The song was never a major hit, but was recorded occasionally in the ‘40s, and then brought into the jazz canon in the 1950’s when it was recorded by John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Freddie Hubbard and more..

In mid-September, Mingus announced that he was heading out to the Monterey Jazz Festival in California. Along with other compositions he had written, he planned to present an extended work about integration that he called ”Meditations on a Pair of Wirecutters”. ”It’s fully orchestrated,” he said.
.
I wasn’t sure why the expanded band was special, but he was exuberant, and his high spirits were growing higher. He explained that the piece he had written had become a hymn to injustice, that he had dedicated it to black Americans imprisoned behind electric barbed wire in the South.
.
”They don’t have ovens and gas faucets in this country yet,” he said grimly as a waitress appeared with a hunk of Gorgonzola and two giant steaks. ”But they have electric fences. So I wrote a prayer about some wire cutters. I wrote a prayer we’d find some scissors and get out!”
