Tomorrow I’ll start getting back to my regularly scheduled programming (posting what I’m reading), but I didn’t want to go through this day without saying one more time, thank you. We need more words for that concept. Those two never feel quite right or enough, but thank you. For being on this wild ride with me, for giving my books a chance, for reading with an open heart, being gentle with my fictional softies and being, I hope, gentle with yourselves and reading what you love and supporting authors and bookstores and libraries. And also a huge thank you to all the writers, and especially the romance writers, who have been doing this much longer than me, whose work has been not only an inspiration but also has simply brought me so much joy as a reader. This book is very much not what I set out to write but it’s also the one I needed. I hope it reminds you that you deserve to be happy, and that your version of happiness doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. There is no one right way to be, except to be you.

One week until release and I’m freaking out honestly. Trying to channel my jitters directly into my hair. Wonder if by styling myself exactly as I did at 17 I’m helping manifest speak now (tv). Still some signed copies of happy place available for preorder via books a million.
Took two days but with the help of the incredible @josephbethcincy booksellers, we got all these signed. I THINK maybe they still have some? Also got to stop by @booksaremagicbk and sign some too. I am really, really excited to announce that HAPPY place is the Walmart Spring Romance Book Club pick. This is really special to me because it means, in those (many) American towns where there’s no Barnes & noble, let alone a local indie store, readers will have access to HAPPY PLACE. My friend @lovinloslibros at @berkleyromance had this great idea for us to all share our happy places to celebrate the upcoming release of happy place 🥹🥹🥹. In the book, Harriet’s ultimate happy place is the seaside Maine cottage where she meets up with her friends from college every summer, but it’s also a bunch of other little places that have special history to her. Happy places, to me, are more about a feeling of rightness. They’re the places where you feel sure you’re exactly where you should be. They give you a sensation of brushing up against the sublime and understanding your place in the universe and the timeline. When I’m on the shore of Lake Michigan, I could pretty much always talk myself into crying. I feel so small there, but also strangely consequential. I feel the divine all around me, and I feel so grateful to get to be alive and sentient on this planet, even though it so often breaks our hearts. I feel connected to every breathing and living thing there, and to all my past selves. I spent my formative years there. I made some of my best friends there. We trekked out onto someone’s private property and camped in a storm, while I had a 102 degree fever (why????????). We drank coconut rum and cokes out of water bottles on the hot sand. We climbed over the cliffs made of ice in the winter to look down on the unfrozen water below. We wandered down a street full of old Victorians looking for frat parties to infiltrate in costumes for themes of our own making. We got our hearts broken. I held my best friend’s hand as she fell asleep in the bath, asking why it all felt so hard. We fought. We broke up with each other. We got back together. We became family to each other. Those were some of the darkest and most beautiful years of my life, and I’m so many ways they made me who I am. Hardened me in places and flayed me in others, and made me appreciate my days on earth in the presence of love. Tell me your happy place. Tell me why it matters to you so much, and how it made you YOU. I want to see your personal Lake Michigan and your brush with the sublime.
