And just like that… Weekend at Vivian’s session 3 comes to a close. 🥲 I love hosting and cooking and teaching and Bald Head Island — that’s why I decided to do these workshops. But what I didn’t anticipate was leaving each weekend with so many new friends. Thank you, all, for taking a chance on this experience and bringing so much of yourselves to it. You’ve reminded me why we do what we do. I also want to give a huge shoutout to our partners (@branchhomedesigns, @smitheyironware, @haandmade, @cicil.home) for helping us pull off these weekends. For years, I’ve read the writing on the wall. Why is this so hard? How have I taken two of the most joyful things humans can do — which is, cook for people and provide them hospitality — how have I made it such a miserable life? Not just for myself, but for everyone I engage with in the restaurant business. One of my favorite podcasts, @thesporkful, had me on to talk about the future of fine dining. It’s worth a listen. Remembering a legend, the inimitable Emily Meggett, and sending our deepest sympathies to her family and all who loved her. We were honored to host Emily and her family for Vivian’s most recent book club event in March with @chswineandfood along with co-author @kaylasstewart and photographer @ultraclay. When Emily spoke, you could hear a pin drop — that is, until, the room roared with laughter at her zingers. She commanded attention and deserved it too; we’re so grateful we were able to give her some flowers while she was here. Buy the Gullah Geechee Home Cooking and cook from it, or honor her memory by donating to efforts to maintain the Hutchinson House, and others like it. Posting a link in our stories to donate directly. From @kaylasstewart: I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to properly articulate the love, respect, and adoration I have for Mrs. Emily Meggett. Though she is now with the ancestors, her generosity, impact, and kindness will endure for generations to come. Mrs. Emily was insightful, brilliant, creative, dynamic, beautiful, kind, generous, and an enduring light to every single person who was lucky enough to be in her presence. I will miss her more than words can describe, and I’m so exceedingly grateful for the time I spent with this incredible, magnificent woman, and so grateful for all she gave to this world during her tremendous life. It was an honor of a lifetime to help her tell her story to the world, and I’m tremendously grateful that my relationship with her extended well beyond deliverables or deadlines. As far as she was concerned, I was her “daughter,” and she was my grandmother. I gained an additional family—one that I will treasure forever. May she rest among the angels in the sweetest, most heavenly peace.
