I have no idea how a whiskey that’s 121 proof can taste this smooth, but the new Barrel Strength Edition of Knobel does. But please, don’t take my word for it. First come, first served…

Yesterday, in Oklahoma City, I ate an onion burger at the Sun Cattle Co. It was without a doubt, the best onion burger I’ve ever had, and quite possibly, the best hamburger ever made. It was called The Big Jack, and I had mine with cheese.
Onion burgers are an Oklahoma thing, made popular during the Depression when meat was hard to come by. Today, it’s a pile of fresh ground beef with lots of onions mixed in. Big Jack is the kid in the cowboy hat, and the double burger is named for him. Jack’s not that big yet, but I suspect he will be, someday soon. His little sister is Ruby, and their dad is Matt. As you can see, they appear to have fallen off the cover of Modern Cowboy.
Matt just opened the restaurant with his old buddy Russ, and I think they’ve got a winner. The beef is terrific, and Matt is committed to providing what the hipsters call a “farm to table” experience. He doesn’t call it that, of course. He calls it, “the way people were intended to eat.”
In other words, Matt and Russ want you to know where your food comes from – in this case, right down the road, from The Sun Cattle Company that Matt owns and operates. They also want to honor the animals who made the ultimate sacrifice for your dining pleasure. Case in point – #27. The first cow to be served at their new restaurant, who looks over all who enter.
A tip of the hat to them all…

Here’s to you, Mom, for postponing your dream of becoming a writer for sixty years, in order to become the mother I’m now obliged to share with the world. I’ll always be in your debt, and no matter where I roam, always grateful to be among those who absolutely freakin love you.
Happy Mother’s Day!

Are the people in Tennessee friendlier than most other people in most other places? That’s hard to say. You can find friendly people everywhere, but I can tell you that it’s especially easy to find them at @totalwinenashville here in Brentwood. A big thanks to the staff, and the three hundred or so Tennesseans who came out this morning for a handshake, a photo, and a signed bottle of Knobel. I’m much obliged.
A special shoutout to McKenzie, the only dog I’ve ever been asked to autograph, and Baby Max, who didn’t have his ID, and could therefore not complete his transaction. See you in 20 years, Max. Also, a friendly nod to a rather adorable puppy who was named “Knobel,” in honor of my grandfather. Speaking of which, the Barrel Strength (121 proof) is not yet available in stores, but preorders can be placed at Knobelspirits.com, for shipping in time for Father’s Day.
In other news, you can still register for my conversation with @DaveRamsey at 7pm CDT tonight . Sign up for the livestream at Ramseysolutions.com. It’s free. We’re calling it America’s Labor Crisis, because we’ve got one, and something needs to be done.
PS. The enormous cock in front of the tasting room isn’t mine…

I’ve heard from hundreds of people this week, wondering if this invitation from Mary Sullivan was legitimate. It’s not. Nor is it unusual. This particular scammer has hacked into my business partner’s account and sent out thousands of invitations to contact me directly, at a gmail account that is not mine.
It’s annoying, obviously, and clearly fake. (Mary would never use multiple emojis.) Not as annoying as that ad for an erectile dysfunction medication that used my name and likeness several years ago – or the lengthy but completely concocted interview that accompanied it – but annoying, nevertheless.
Obviously, Instagram is powerless to stop these scammers, and no number of warnings from me has proven sufficient to convince the masses that I will “Never Invite Anyone to Contact Me Personally on Social Media.” Not much else to be done, I guess, then to repeat that promise once again, and encourage you all to be highly skeptical of anything you read or see on the Internet, period.
It also really makes me wonder how anyone could welcome the advent of unfettered Artificial Intelligence, until or unless we first figure out how to eradicate scammers and eliminate identity theft as it stands today. There’s absolutely no reason to believe that deep fake technology won’t be immediately and profoundly abused, the moment it’s widely available. On the positive side, it allows me to now assure you, that anything you see or hear me say that you deem offensive or objectionable, is not really me.
Carry on,
Mike (as far as you know.)
I’m back from Oklahoma, where I had a swell time learning more about why oil and natural gas are not, in fact, the enemy of civilized life, or for that matter, the proximate cause of the looming Armageddon that so many continue to breathlessly predict. More on that later. For now, it’s time for a cuppa coffee with my mom, who is—based on the feedback I just endured these last few days—more popular in Oklahoma than I am. Enjoy this clip.
For those who just can’t get enough of her, link in bio for our whole conversation.

I had another conversation with @vinnietortorich about his new film, FAT – A Documentary.
It’s a scathing indictment of why and how we’ve come to believe so much nonsense about basic nutrition. It’ll make you angry, and more importantly, it’ll make you want to eat better.

“Mike – I’ve just discovered your podcast, and really like the “mysteries for a curious mind with a short attention span.” Do you really write all of them on planes?” — Doug Morrissey
Hi Doug. It’s true that most of them are started on planes, but it would be inaccurate to say that I finish them there. Most require a second or third pass, usually in an environment more conducive to concentration. The latest story for instance, began on the tarmac at SFO last week moments before takeoff. It wasn’t completed, however, until I arrived at my destination. Turns out I needed a Negroni and a sunset over the South Seas to finish the job. Here ’tis, hot off the press…

Dan Clare works for @davhq . This Marine has been there and done that. He’s known today as the whistleblower who forced the people in Washington to finally start paying attention.

The Ring of Sting with Smoking’ Ed Currie
Ed Currie grows the hottest peppers in the world. I know this, because I visited him a few years ago at the @puckerbutt_pepper_company, where I saw firsthand what happens to a human being who eats one. (Sorry, Zack!) Ed’s story is, frankly, too extraordinary to tell on a single segment of Dirty Jobs, but perfect for a format like this one. Nevermind his crazy hot peppers, or the business he’s built around them, or his legions of pepperheads and devoted followers – Ed’s personal journey is riveting. Just how exactly, does a drug addict that weighs 370 lbs and drinks over a gallon and a half of vodka every day, wind up clean and sober and 200 pounds lighter with a preternatural penchant for peppers? The answer is absolutely worth your time.

Hunger is the Best Sauce with Michael Easter
Everyone knows that personal growth requires us to get out of our comfort zone. (No pain, no gain!) So why then, do we go so far out of our way to avoid discomfort? Why do only two percent of us take the stairs if an escalator is available? Why do we build ourselves “safe spaces” to keep us insulated from uncomfortable ideas? Why do we always hit the “easy button?”
These are just a few of the questions posed in The Comfort Crisis, which I encourage everyone to read. I met the author, Michael Easter, a few weeks ago, I suspected he’d be a great guest on the podcast, and I was right.
Michael spent 33 days in Alaska on a caribou hunt that was, to put it mildly, uncomfortable in every way. His misery, however, led to a level of enlightenment that we can all experience – without spending 33 days in the arctic circle.

“Adventure is Disaster, Narrowly Averted.”
It’s hard to say if my old friend Jason Williams is a treasure hunter obsessed with documentaries, or a documentarian obsessed with treasure hunters. Either way, I’ve had the pleasure to narrate a number of his projects and wanted to talk to him about the recent announcement from Nat Geo and the BBC to document the remarkable life of Tommy Thompson – the most controversial and complicated treasure hunter alive today. (As of a few months ago, he was still in jail, where he’s been since 2015. I think he still is.)
