Mike Rowe Instagram – Hunger is the Best Sauce with Michael Easter

Everyone knows that personal growth requires us to get out of our comfort zone. (No pain, no gain!) So why then, do we go so far out of our way to avoid discomfort? Why do only two percent of us take the stairs if an escalator is available? Why do we build ourselves “safe spaces” to keep us insulated from uncomfortable ideas? Why do we always hit the “easy button?”

These are just a few of the questions posed in The Comfort Crisis, which I encourage everyone to read. I met the author, Michael Easter, a few weeks ago, I suspected he’d be a great guest on the podcast, and I was right.

Michael spent 33 days in Alaska on a caribou hunt that was, to put it mildly, uncomfortable in every way. His misery, however, led to a level of enlightenment that we can all experience – without spending 33 days in the arctic circle.

Mike Rowe Instagram – “Mike – I’ve just discovered your podcast, and really like the “mysteries for a curious mind with a short attention span.” Do you really write all of them on planes?” — Doug Morrissey

Hi Doug. It’s true that most of them are started on planes, but it would be inaccurate to say that I finish them there. Most require a second or third pass, usually in an environment more conducive to concentration. The latest story for instance, began on the tarmac at SFO last week moments before takeoff. It wasn’t completed, however, until I arrived at my destination. Turns out I needed a Negroni and a sunset over the South Seas to finish the job. Here ’tis, hot off the press…
