Also known as the “Cradle of Styria” (“Wiege der Steiermark”), it is the oldest surviving Cistercian community in the world. The library contains more than 100.000 books, incunables and manuscripts. The Archive contains more than 1000 deeds from the middle ages. It contains, among others, a calender table from Johannes Kepler and a original Luther bible from 1569. The library is also where @haag.peter and I got married. Apparently It is the only documented wedding in past 1000 years which has taken place in the library. The chief monk of the monastery, my husbands teacher was my Austrian witness appointed by court. The monastery’s living quarters were converted to a school in 1947. Today it boasts of one of the most beautiful higher education elite schools of Austria. This school also happens to be my husbands alma mater and every time I go here I am so in awe ( and a bit jealous) of the environment of schooling in this 1100 year old architectural heritage. The basilica is one of the most beautiful and impressive churches in the world and has been build by Johann Georg Stengg between 1738 and 1766.
