It was an honor for me to be at Sundance for a movie about the Iranian-American experience, and even more honorable to have worn a Kurdish inspired design created by Kurdish-Iranian-American designer @jilaatelier, in memory of Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Jina Amini — the 22 year old woman whose death at the hands of the Islamic Republic sparked the current uprising in Iran.
In this uprising, the regime is witnessing something they have systematically worked hard to prevent: unity. From Sistan Baluchistan in the southeast to Kurdistan in the northwest, the people have united to voice their disdain for a regime that’s been oppressing them for 44 years.
I know I don’t save lives by wearing this or by talking about Iran at Sundance. But storytelling is a powerful tool in turning a page on prejudice and indifference. And I can tell you with the utmost confidence that Iranians at the biggest US independent film festival were very present and very vocal — and people are listening.
I’m forever inspired by the brave revolutionaries in Iran who are the ones causing a perceptible shift in how Iranians are seen, and we as artists owe it to them to further expand on this empathetic shift and bring more and more real human — and Iranian — stories to life.
With that, I’m beyond grateful for this movie, The Persian Version, for being a window into an Iranian-American experience, but at its core shining a light on the strength and resilience of Iranian women.
