Recorded in 2018 and shot over a year ago, I really didn’t think so many strangers from all corners of the globe (who I found using Instagram’s location tool lol) would say yes to me. But they did. 🥹 A testament to the universality of music and the connection it creates among us. This time, through a 150 to 200(?)-year-old Iranian love song from Khorasan. Iran’s cultural identity is rooted in its rich artistic and historical heritage—but a large part of it has unfortunately been suppressed for the past 44 years. I hope all Iranian artists will one day be able to exercise their right to free expression without fear of persecution. 💚🤍♥️ Full video on YouTube (link in bio). Song also available on Spotify and Apple Music.
Wow… U.S. Dramatic Audience award?! This is incredible. Thank you!! @sundanceorg 💚🤍♥️ It was an honor for me to be at Sundance for a movie about the Iranian-American experience, and even more honorable to have worn a Kurdish inspired design created by Kurdish-Iranian-American designer @jilaatelier, in memory of Kurdish-Iranian Mahsa Jina Amini — the 22 year old woman whose death at the hands of the Islamic Republic sparked the current uprising in Iran. In this uprising, the regime is witnessing something they have systematically worked hard to prevent: unity. From Sistan Baluchistan in the southeast to Kurdistan in the northwest, the people have united to voice their disdain for a regime that’s been oppressing them for 44 years. I know I don’t save lives by wearing this or by talking about Iran at Sundance. But storytelling is a powerful tool in turning a page on prejudice and indifference. And I can tell you with the utmost confidence that Iranians at the biggest US independent film festival were very present and very vocal — and people are listening. I’m forever inspired by the brave revolutionaries in Iran who are the ones causing a perceptible shift in how Iranians are seen, and we as artists owe it to them to further expand on this empathetic shift and bring more and more real human — and Iranian — stories to life. With that, I’m beyond grateful for this movie, The Persian Version, for being a window into an Iranian-American experience, but at its core shining a light on the strength and resilience of Iranian women. Thank you @marakeshfilm for bringing your beautiful story to life. And a huge congratulations to everyone involved. I absolutely love my @tpv_film family. Woman. Life. Freedom. #زن_زندگی_آزادی 💚🤍♥️ Earrings: @persian.jewelry 🙏🏼

Two days away from the world premiere of The Persian Version at Sundance. 💫 I can’t wait for you all to watch this film. Thank you @marakeshfilm for this wild ride and thank you @sundanceorg for shining a major light on Iranian artists this year, with four Iranian directed films accepted. Representation matters. 💚🤍♥️ LesssGoooo.

Day 181. How can this oppressive regime possibly hold on to power when faced with a generation of fearless individuals like Sepideh Gholian? It can’t. After serving a four year and seven month sentence, Sepideh walks out of prison without wearing the mandatory hijab and fearlessly chants an anti-regime slogan, (second slide), fully aware of being recorded. Security forces kidnap her just moments later. Her whereabouts are currently unknown. This type of immeasurable courage needs to be talked about and understood, because it is truly remarkable. And the patently preposterous actions of the regime in response to her defiance needs to be met with worldwide condemnation, not normalization. I am in complete awe of these lionhearted revolutionaries who refuse to be intimidated or silenced by this ruthless regime, as they fight for their freedom and for a free Iran. اين ميزان شجاعت ستودنيه #sepidehgholian #womanlifefreedom #زن_زندگی_آزادی 💚🤍♥️

Day 140. Jafar Panahi, one of Iran’s – and the world’s – best-known filmmakers, is now on hunger strike to protest his unjust and inhumane continued incarceration. I’m sharing some of his work because you’ve likely seen or heard of them. Rich in humanistic themes, his films cover wide-ranging stories of Iran’s social and cultural struggles. Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasoulof, Toomaj Salehi and Hossein Mohammadi are among the many filmmakers and artists currently in prison for criticizing Iran’s regime. They are *also* among the thousands of protesters who have been jailed since September 2022 for the same reason — four of whom have been executed. The Islamic Republic’s draconian treatment of its own people, as well as its complete disregard for the rule of law, are tactics aimed at silencing those who have criticized their cruelty, and should be met with global condemnation. A small step in the right direction is the Mahsa Act. Please watch human rights lawyer @gissounia ‘s videos as she explains what this bill would do and what we can do to support it. #jafarpanahi #farhadmeysami #MohammadBoroughani #armitaabassi #niloofarhamedi #toomajsalehi #elahehmohammadi #astiyazhhaghighi #amirmohammadahmadi #stopexecutionsiniran #womanlifefreedom #زن_زندگی_آزادی 💚🤍♥️
