Ukrainian firefighters survive huge explosion. Paramedics save the woman injured by Russian cluster bombs. Ukrainian firefighters in the Donetsk region are being overwhelmed by recent Russian attacks on towns near Bakhmut. Barrages of cluster bombs carried by missiles and the Uragan MLRS have set multiple houses on fire in town of Kostyantynivka. Fighting in the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has “escalated,” with another push by Russian forces to break through Ukrainian defence lines that have largely held firm for the past six months, Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister said on Friday. Police said Russian forces attacked Kostyantynivka with S-300 missiles and cluster munitions. Eight civilians were injured as a result of the shelling and about 14 houses, nine cars, and civil infrastructure were damaged or completely destroyed. #ukraine #russia #invasion #war #fire #firefighters #medics #donbas #bakhmut #documentary #video

Ukrainian soldiers and tank crews took a brief respite on Wednesday as the conflict rolled on near the Ukrainian city of Chasiv Yar. As Russian forces continue their attempts to encircle Bakhmut, Ukrainian service personnel are determined to fight back as long as needed. The battle for the city the Ukrainians have dubbed “fortress Bakhmut” has become emblematic of the way each side has tried to wear down the other. Russian forces must go through Bakhmut to push deeper into parts of the Donetsk province they do not yet control, though Western officials say that capture of the city is unlikely to change the course of the conflict. The battle for Bakhmut has lasted six months and reduced the city with a prewar population of more than 70,000 to a smoldering wasteland. Russian troops have tried to envelope the city from three sides, leaving only a narrow corridor leading west. The only highway west has been targeted by Russian artillery fire, forcing Ukrainian defenders to rely increasingly on country roads, which are hard to use before the muddy ground dries. #ukraine #russia #invasion #war #tank #donbas #bakhmut
Drone battles near Donetsk in eastern Ukraine continue as the scale of destruction from Russian bombardment on Ukrainian cities becomes clearer. Officers of Ukraine’s 59th Motorized Brigade are using improvised battle drones to stop the Russian advance. An officer who goes by the nom de guerre “Sushist” said when Russians are not able to take a city, they just destroy it with artillery. The Russian war tactic, called “burned land,” was used in Bakhmut, Maryinka, and many other Ukrainian cities and villages, the officer said. #ukraine #russia #invasion #war #video #documentary #news #apnews #politics #donbas #bakhmut
With Russian forces claiming they have surrounded Bakhmut, the Ukrainian Armed forces have said fierce fighting is continuing in the beleaguered town and on its outskirts. Bakhmut has been the focus of intense fighting for months, with Russian troops including large forces from the private Wagner Group inching ever closer to the key eastern stronghold. As the battle rages on, local residents still living on the frontline have shared their struggles amid frequent shelling.
I am honored and privileged to present the “20 Days In Mariupol” at CPH:DOX with @michellemizner, @raneyaronson, and Derl McCrudden. It was a powerful experience to watch our film in a theater with a huge live audience, and it again reminded me of the importance of community in confronting trauma and tragedy. We continue to remind international audiences about the suffering and loss of residents of Mariupol and all Ukrainians. It’s crucial that we all do our part to ensure that no one forgets about them. The conversations that followed the screening were inspiring and hopeful, and it’s clear that we can all make a difference by taking action and raising awareness. Thank you to festivals and cinemas like CPH:DOX for providing a platform for these important conversations. #20daysinmariupol #ukraine #russia #invasion #war #warcrimes #documentary #video @apnews @frontlinepbs @evgenymaloletka @vasilisastepanenko @_jordumb Photo: CPH:DOC
