I tell the story all the time of how I went to the Columbus Museum in my Georgia hometown for the first time on an elementary school field trip with @gerimdavis my beloved art teacher at St Anne’s School. It was an exhibition of @thebobartlett paintings. As we walked through the show my eyes were wide open when they landed on an image of a man standing in yard. He was tall, and beautifully black. He met my gaze and I saw my future. I was captivated not only by him but by the idea that I wanted to make big beautiful paintings that told my story. 40 years later here we are. RP This was so much fun @samiranasr 🖤thank you @harpersbazaarus Artists Calida Rawles (@calidagarciarawles) and Amy Sherald (@asherald) and writer Ta-Nehisi Coates (@tanehisipcoates) have been friends since the mid-’90s, when Rawles and Sherald were studio mates at Spelman College in Atlanta, and Coates was an undergrad at Howard University in Washington, D.C. But beyond their shared history, there are central notions of personal, physical, political, and creative freedom that they’ve each explored in their work. We all have different capacities and varied ways we are able to show up. But remember, there is always some way to show up for whatever it is that is breaking you heart.
I will put some resources to learn more about the crises happening in Haiti and Afghanistan in my stories. Two organizations I am personally donating to, following,and learning more about are @mothersofafghanistan currently serving Kabul/Jalalabad and @sowaseed working with orphaned children in Haiti.
