Amy Sherald had a rare heart condition and, after waiting months, received a transplant and has found creative ways to honor her donor, Kristin Lin Smith. “I have on my Instagram account, I hashtag it ‘adventures of Kristin and Amy’ so that I can mark all the big moments and include her in those moments. And when I sign my name, I put a little heart on the end for her,” explains Sherald.
Amy Sherald paints dirtbike riders in Baltimore “Although most people consider them a nuisance, I think there’s something so fantastic about their ability to teach themselves these highly skilled ways of riding these dirt bikes,” says the artist (@asherald) in our newly released film. “They’re riding straight up and down, but a lot of times their hands are off of the bike, and there’s a sense of freedom. I wanted to try to capture this effect of, like, flying. Although these are dirt bikes, and dirt bikes are loud, these paintings are kind of quiet, as if they’ve b been lifted off the ground, they’re flying in the air, and it’s just like this moment of silence.” 🎬Link in @art21 bio to watch the full film, always free.
