I love winter and all its beauty, but this time of year marks the dates of my father’s death and my stepfather’s death. I feel the inspiring thaumaturgy of winter and also the missing.
Here is an owl I saw on this day a couple of years ago. I heard his call first. It felt like a reminder, the melancholy bell of his feathered cathedral. Regal, fixed, tall. I waited to hear the sound again, and when I locked eyes with his metallic red, he slowly raised his giant arms, and before me, an angel on a Christmas tree.
