Wrapping this awesome feature film “Break,” got me thinking about all the amazing people behind-the-scenes who are an intricate part of this creative process. From my amazing manager @jasonpriluck and casting director #JeffGafner who sent me the self-tape request to the dynamic @darrenweiss8 who had the vision to exec produce and star in this film, to the team of talented producers @john_ierardi and @boyoungblood and @jasonleephillips_film to the artistic cinematographer @akisdp, to the always fun costume designer @hampsteads to the ever-insightful writer/director @willwernick and so many more that made this project a ton of fun. #TBT❤️ One audition from the amazing humans at Telsey & Co Casting turned into 4 years recurring in an epic role on Netflix hit comedy series, “Atypical.” That same office sent me a self-tape request for a great role on the final season of the hit drama, “This Is Us.” None of this would have happened without our awesome casting directors. 🎬😘⭐️ In fact, this is one of thousands of stories I could share about how casting directors have helped my career flourish. Shout out to Michael Testa for giving me my first TV job on “Live Shot.” 😜 And Mark Teschner who cast me in 1 episode of GH that turned into 10 (which turned into my character getting written into the spin-off for 8 more episodes). ❤️🙏🎬 So grateful for you all. So much fun to “get off Zoom and back in the room” to inspire, uplift and empower actors and creative warriors from all over the country. Thank you @wendyalane1 for having the vision and putting in all the work to bring so many expert speakers, coaches, agents, managers, directors and casting directors together to teach, connect, converse and create community IN PERSON. I loved being the opening keynote speaker and guiding everyone to creating breakthroughs. (The standing ovation got me teary-eyed). So fun to also be part of the working actor’s panel with so many talented actors -Kenzo Lee, Holly Gagnier, James Ciccione, and Gloria Garayua, Jason Stuart and James Ciccone. Loved seeing some old friends and making new ones. Hugging my amazing students for the first time in person (@melaniecollup @dawnniemercado @jeanvavra to name a few) and having others share that my talk released blocks within them and soothed their soul. 🙏 Loved seeing @marketing4actors for the first time after years of online friendship. Learning that @realjmdougherty and I went to Indiana University together. Hearing amazing stories from the legendary director @giljunger. Hearing about the book writing process from @john_frank_levey_ (Congrats on the book!) Learning about how much @lisazambetticasting champions working moms (and is one). Chatting with sweet friend @lisalondoncasting and boomeranging with her (and her awesome book!) Learning that @jamiedoerschuck is a giant fan of my character in Mass Effect (and a marketing ninja). And hugging Aussie mate @seanmiguelperez in person. Just a few of the countless moments of joy, hope, inspiration and impact this event had on me and so many others. Not to mention all the amazing attendees who I shared heartfelt conversations with all weekend long. The takeaway: You have one life. Go follow your dreams. Do more of what scares you. Find like-minded people to help and support you. My Father. My Hero. He was a World War 2 Navy Air-Sea rescue pilot, helping those who were wounded in war. Growing up, anytime a plane would fly by our house, he would go outside, stop, look up and name it. Thinking of all the veterans who served our country today, and the freedoms we all too often take for granted. I learned so much from my fun-loving, adventurous, insightful Navy dad. To sum it up… he always encouraged me to: “Do what you love. Take the trip. And keep going, Sunshine.” ❤️ #MemorialDay #keepGoingSunshine
Been having any worries, doubts or fears lately? Here’s what has helped me and many of my students. I like to think of it as “answering the call,,” when my emotions and thoughts get the best of me. I also like to use acronyms because they help me remember things. So “c.a.l.l.” stands for compassion acceptance love and more love. So if you’ve been feeling down or frustrated or tense or anxious, know that it’s OK, we all have those moments. But the best thing you can do for yourself is to not only express your emotions, but answer the call and try to flow more compassion acceptance love and even more love your way. Declare in the comments “I am answering the call,” and then I’ll know that you’ll pause today and go easy on yourself. Big results (the shiny stuff you might see on Instagram) come from small, committed, daily actions. Like this morning when I woke up at 7:12 and could have told myself “it’s too late to get to that 7:30 workout I already signed up for,” but I just asked myself “how will you feel when you’re done?” And with that I got out of bed and here I am. It’s those micro-decisions that shape our lives. Those small committed daily actions that no one really sees that eventually add up to the big wins. What I love about this workout is it’s a group setting, but you focus on your own workout. A good metaphor for life too. You’re really only competing with yourself. And prioritizing your well-being will always be a wonderful way to start the day. Then no matter what uncertainty arises in the world (or our industry) you’ll be reminded that you can control the thoughts you think and the actions you take. And P.S. I slept in yesterday. 😜 So go easy on yourself but remember to begin again.
